Stefan Borson: Rangers have ‘Amazing’ chance to land £60m windfall after stunning twist

Rangers have propelled themselves into the Scottish Premiership title race following their excellent recent form.

Danny Rohl’s side claimed six straight league victories in a row, but that run has now come to an end.

Rangers drew 0-0 against Hibernian at Easter Road on Sunday (1 February) in a blow to their title hopes.

The Glasgow giants have now fallen six points behind leaders Hearts, while Celtic leapfrogged their Old Firm rivals into second place on goals scored.

Alongside being crowned Scottish champions, winning the league secures whoever comes out on top with a place in the final qualifying round of the Champions League.

How Rangers can make ‘massive’ difference to their finances

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Rangers would have an “amazing” chance of securing a return to the Champions League if they can win the Scottish Premiership title.

Rangers were competing in the Europa League this season, but they failed to make it past the league phase of the competition.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the importance of winning the title, Borson said: “It makes a massive difference. I mean, if you have got three rounds of Champions League qualifying, it’s so disruptive to your season, but it’s just actually hard to qualify.

“Whereas if you can get to that one qualifying round, you’ve got an amazing chance. Especially with the new format, we’ve seen you get the four games minimum, and if you somehow can put together a run that gives you 10 points let’s say, and somehow get yourself a play-off as well.

“I think clearly they’re not going to finish in the top eight, right? We know that. It’s just not for teams like Rangers these days. I’m afraid it just is not possible to finish in the top eight, so the best they can do is a play-off. But that feels doable.”

How much Champions League qualification could be worth for Rangers

Borson revealed qualifying for the Champions League could be worth up to £60million for Rangers.

“Champions League can be worth £50-60m, and can give you five home games, that’s amazing,” said Borson.

“That’s the ultimate prize for Rangers, Celtic and Hearts now. If Hearts are also in the mix, it would be completely transformational for Hearts. But it’s important for Rangers and Celtic to be regularly there, and then topping that off with player trading.

“But right now, it’s all about can Rangers keep the momentum to win the league. That’s the priority, so I can understand them not doing anything to disrupt that.”

It comes after Rangers reportedly rejected a £13m offer for Youssef Chermiti from Fenerbahce and a loan offer from Monaco for Djeidi Gassama that included an obligation-to-buy clause worth more than £10m.
