His report states that the Lilywhites’ board have promised to be better at selling, which could give them a big decision to make on the 24-year-old as he is resisting signing a new contract.

Why Tottenham must cash in on Van de Ven

If the Reds are offering a huge amount, then Spurs need to cash in on their star defender, especially if he will not agree to a new deal.

Given the state of the club, it not a surprise that the Dutchman wants to explore his options, and potentially move to a league rival, who are better positioned for success.

The N17 outfit need to get themselves into a better place on the pitch, to keep their best talents, and make sure this situation does not repeat itself.

Until they are in a position to fight for the highest honours, then it will keep happening, and if it does, then they need to sell while the value is high.

Losing the young defender would be a huge loss, but the idea of letting him leave for free is one that any Spurs supporter should be repulsed by.

If they can get a figure in the £80million region, they should take it and reinvest in the squad, to build for a brighter future.
