Tottenham miss out on extra £10m+ windfall after Uefa reveals £16m boost

Tottenham Hotspur have missed out on more than £10million following their Champions League exit. 

Spurs secured a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday (18 March), courtesy of a Randal Kolo Muani strike and a Xavi Simons brace.

However, it wasn’t enough for Igor Tudor’s side to progress to the quarter-finals after their 5-2 defeat in Madrid last week saw them lose 7-5 on aggregate.

Atletico will now face Barcelona next month for a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

It provides Diego Simeone’s side with a chance to earn significant prize money, but Tottenham have benefited financially themselves from the Champions League despite their exit. 

How Tottenham’s Champions League prize money breaks down

As per official Uefa documents, each team will earn a guaranteed £16.1m for playing in the Champions League this season, based on the current euro to pound exchange rate. 

They also receive extra cash payments under the governing body’s value pillar system, which is split into European and non-European segments based on their coefficient ranking and the market pool. 

Swiss Ramble reported the value pillar is worth £26.8m for Tottenham this season.

Meanwhile, clubs were awarded £1.8m for each win and £605,000 for a draw in the league phase, meaning Spurs banked £9.6m after recording five victories and one draw from their eight fixtures. 

They also received £9.5m for qualifying automatically for the round of 16 as well as £1.7m for finishing fourth in the league phase.

The 36 clubs competing in the Champions League this season are handed an additional amount based on their individual ranking in the league phase.

Kairat earned £238,000 after finishing bottom, while Tottenham landed a further £7.9m.

However, Tudor’s side missed out on a £10.8m windfall after failing to reach the quarter-finals, with Atletico scooping up the extra prize money.

It means Spurs raked in £71.6m from the Champions League this season, including the payments from the value pillar system. 

How Tottenham could smash their club-record revenue

Tottenham’s finances will receive a boost as a result of their performances in the Champions League.

Although the north London giants have struggled domestically this season, their European windfall will put them in a strong position to post a new club-record revenue. 

Deloitte’s 2026 Money League revealed Spurs’ turnover surged from £528m in 2023-24 to £565m last season, marking their highest-ever total.

The attention now turns back to the Premier League as Tottenham look to retain their top-flight status.

Tudor’s side head into their crunch game against fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest on Sunday (22 March) sitting 16th in the table and just one point above the relegation zone.
