Tottenham vs Brighton ref watch: Three decisions Stuart Attwell got wrong, including Kevin Danso incident

Tottenham Hotspur faced Brighton in a must-win Premier League clash in North London, and Stuart Attwell was the man in the middle.

Pedro Porro got the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium bouncing on Saturday, 18 April, with the Spaniard beating Bart Verbruggen to a cross, only for his goal to be cancelled out by a Kaoru Mitoma stunner.

It looked like, for all the world, that the two sides would have to settle for a point each, but Xavi Simons stole the show in the 77th minute, curling a beautiful effort home, which many thought was the winner.

However, Tottenham drew 2-2 with the Seagulls, thanks to a Georginio Rutter strike, and there remained some interesting talking points concerning the referee’s overall performance amidst all the drama.

Kevin Danso gets away with an early elbow on Yankuba Minteh

Just minutes into the game, Kevin Danso was caught one-on-one with Yankuba Minteh, and knowing that he’d stand no chance in a foot race, he put an elbow into the winger’s face.

Where the contact was made appeared completely accidental, but it undoubtedly should have seen the centre-back carded, which would have put the defender under pressure for the rest of the game.

Stuart Attwell leaves Dominic Solanke furious

In the opening minutes, Dominic Solanke nearly played in his teammate when winning an aerial battle against Jan Paul van Hecke, a battle which the striker should have been punished for.

It left the Brighton defender in pain on the floor, but Attwell allowed for play to continue, despite what appeared like a clear foul. Later on in the first half, the same happened again, but a foul was awarded.

Decisions like these are a prime example of why referees have been so heavily criticised by supporters this season, and Solanke had every right to question the inconsistency.

Jan Paul van Hecke avoids blatant booking

Van Hecke was in a battle all afternoon, especially when it came to trying to keep Solanke out of the game, but that proved difficult as the centre-half made yet another foul.

While the Dutchman ended the game on just two fouls [FotMob], it could have been more, and he certainly deserved to go into the referee’s notebook after wiping out Spurs’ striker with a late challenge.

The 25-year-old somehow escaped a booking, with Spurs fans pointing out that Danso and Yves Bissouma were both cautioned for much less than the defender.
