'Unacceptable' - Ex-FIFA official blasts Crystal Palace star for what he did vs Leeds, wants talks to be held

Jaydee Canvot should be reminded of what good sportsmanship means after “unacceptable” scenes in the draw between Crystal Palace and Leeds United.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the defender should be ashamed after celebrating Gabriel Gudmundsson’s red card.

Daniel Farke’s side were reduced to 10 men, rather controversially, just before the half-time whistle, when Gudmundsson’s foul on Ismaila Sarr was punished with a second yellow card.

Thomas Bramall has forgotten about the Swede’s initial caution, having to be reminded by the Palace players to send him off, with many bemused by what they’d seen unfold at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace should have words with Jaydee Canvot

Canvot could be seen actively celebrating the decision behind the referee’s back, with the footage then going viral on social media for all the wrong reasons, it would seem.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former referee said: “I just think it’s unacceptable.

“Competition in Premier League games? Don’t worry about that. Things are part and parcel of the game.

“But celebrating a fellow professional getting a red card in this way, someone needs to whisper in his ear, ‘It just doesn’t look good’. It was unacceptable.”

The reaction on social media has not been much better, with match-going fans at Selhurst Park also critical of the player’s actions, especially given how harsh the sending off was in the first place.

Leeds United fans make their feelings clear over Gabriel Gudmundsson

It would have been very easy for the away supporters to blame Gudmundsson for the Whites dropping two points at Selhurst Park, but they showed their love for the player instead.

After the full-time whistle, the full-back came over to the away end to shake the hands of fans, apologising for getting sent off and putting his teammates in an awful position.

The fans, however, were adamant that the player had nothing to apologise for, instead turning on the referee for his overall performance during the goalless draw in South East London.

With Leeds just three points above the relegation zone, every point counts at this point of the season, and the club are choosing to stick together, rather than put the blame on one person’s shoulders.
