View: 3/10 duo rubbish as 8/10 can leave with head held high - Rangers player ratings vs Porto
James Tavernier captained Rangers to a 3-1 loss against Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.
The Estadio do Dragao hosted Danny Rohl’s team on 29 January, with the Gers getting off to an exceptional start in Portugal.
Djeidi Gassama scored in the sixth minute against Porto, with Findlay Curtis putting in a magnificent cross into the box to set up the French youngster, but subsequent strikes from Rodrigo Mora, Francisco Moura and Emmanuel Fernandez’s own goal saw the Light Blues go 3-1 down at the break.
Francesco Farioli’s team looked the more threatening in the second half, but neither side were able to get on the scoreboard again.
James Tavernier looks out of depth in Rangers loss vs Porto
Rohl has had to rely on James Tavernier a lot this season, with other defensive options either unavailable or not good enough.
While the right-back has had his moments in recent weeks, scoring his 100th league goal in the 3-0 win over Dundee, his defensive frailties are frustrating.
The 34-year-old was all over the place as the Light Blues conceded the second goal against the Portuguese outfit, and he had an embarrassing moment in the second half after being nutmegged by Mora.
While there have been talks to extend Tavernier’s contract at the Glaswegian outfit, the Englishman clearly isn’t good enough to consistently perform for Rohl.
Jack Butland has night to forget at Estadio do Dragao
Jack Butland has been exceptional for Rangers this season, and he’s rightly secured the number one shirt after struggling in the previous campaign.
However, the England international didn’t have the best of nights in Portugal, conceding three goals after a few defensive scrambles.
Along with Tavernier, the 32-year-old had a role to play in the Light Blues going behind against Porto, and the shot-stopper surely could’ve done better on a few occasions.
It would’ve taken a clairvoyant to suggest the Gers would concede three goals in Portugal after the defensive solidity they’ve shown under Rohl of late, but the German manager now has to regroup at Ibrox and focus on the domestic competitions.
