View: Everton star's dream surely still alive after what 40% England ace did vs Japan
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall can’t give up hope of an England call-up for his Everton form after Cole Palmer’s showing in the 1-0 defeat to Japan on Tuesday.
Thomas Tuchel’s side lacked creative spark in the Wembley contest, their last friendly before the World Cup squad is named, in which Kaoru Mitoma scored the only goal of the clash.
The Three Lions were booed and jeered off the pitch on 31 March, with supporters not happy with the result.
The Chelsea man was one of the most disappointing players on the pitch, and Tuchel could be rethinking his plans about taking him to the World Cup as a result.
That could open up the door for Dewsbury-Hall if he can perform for Everton in the coming weeks.
How did Palmer leave the door open for Everton man Dewsbury-Hall?
Dewsbury-Hall has flown under the radar at Everton for some time now, and Tuchel may have a dilemma on his hands after Palmer’s disasterclass performance.
Palmer failed to record a single shot in the contest, and completed just 77 per cent of his 26 pass attempts, per Sofascore.
The Stamford Bridge ace attempted five crosses, but only found a teammate three times, for a 60 per cent success rate.
Palmer’s stats vs Japan Minutes played 59 Pass accuracy 77% Cross accuracy 60% Touches (Possession lost) 40(13) Carries attempted (progressive) 15(2) Ground duels won 2/5(40%)
The former Manchester City gem had 40 touches against the Japanese, but completed none of his two attempted dribbles, and lost the ball 13 times.
He also attempted a total of 15 carries, but only two of those were progressive, for a total distance of 138.6m, and a total progression of 25.4m.
Defensively, the 23-year-old made just one recovery and won just two of the five ground duels that he contested, for a 40 per cent success rate.
Why Dewsbury-Hall can’t give up on England call-up
Tuchel has clearly been keeping an eye on the Blues this season, as James Garner earned a surprising but deserved call-up to the most recent squad.
Surely, Dewsbury-Hall has also caught his eye, despite the intense competition for places in the number 10 position.
The Blues playmaker has played 24 league matches, notching six goals and three assists, creating eight big chances and averaging 1.1 key passes.
The Toffees star compared favourably to the likes of Palmer, Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers, so he should still have a chance to make the plane for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Bellingham has scored four goals and notched three assists in 19 league matches, creating three big chances and averaging 1.6 key passes.
Palmer has nine goals and one assist in 20 league appearances, creating three big chances and averaging one key pass.
Meanwhile, Rogers has notched eight goals and five assists in 31 league games, creating 10 big chances and averaging 1.3 key passes.
Therefore, the Everton man surely still has a shot.
