View: Everton to be encouraged as summer target gives two-word response to transfer talk

Everton will be encouraged by the latest comments from Stoke City ace Sorba Thomas following the culmination of the Championship season.

The Wales international has been linked with a move to Hill Dickinson Stadium in recent months, after a sensational season with Stoke City.

It has been a strong campaign overall for David Moyes’ side, though they are in danger of letting the season fizzle out after their European ambitions took a dent in recent weeks.

Nonetheless, the Toffees will be beginning to look ahead to the summer transfer window, with a view to progressing further up the Premier League standings.

With Thomas previously earmarked for a move, the Blues will be encouraged following Stoke’s disappointing end to the season.

Sorba Thomas drops future comment amid Everton links

Prior to his Stoke move, it had been a far-from-ideal spell for the winger.

Never nailing down a spot at Huddersfield, Thomas would play his part in unsuccessful loan spells with Blackburn and Nantes, before returning to the Championship last summer.

Sorba Thomas stats by club (before Stoke move)AppearancesGoals + Assists
FC Nantes (2024-25 loan)274
Blackburn Rovers (Jan 2023-May 2023 loan)172
Huddersfield Town (2021-2025)12538
Boreham Wood (2016-2021)8613

This season, he has been able to find consistency in the Potteries, registering 21 goal contributions in 45 Championship appearances – the most fulfilling year of his career thus far.

As a result, links with Everton have been mooted in recent months, and the Blues will be more than encouraged by his recent comment, or rather the lack of comment.

Speaking via BBC Sport after Stokes 2-0 defeat to Bristol City on the final day of the Championship campaign, the wideman was asked as to whether he will still be wearing the colours of Stoke next season, to which he laughed and replied saying: “No comment.”

After a positive start to the campaign saw Stoke earmarked as promotion candidates, the wheels continued to fall off for Mark Robins’ side, who would end the season 17th in the second tier.

Since suffering relegation in 2018, consistency has been hard to come by for the Potters, meaning that Thomas could well be in line for a summer switch.

Thomas has been talismanic for Stoke

As has so often been the case for the club since their relegation almost a decade ago, the season ended in a whimper for Stoke.

Talent has been and gone, while the relative lack of promotion ambition has severely hampered them not just in recruitment but also in keeping hold of their stars.

And Thomas is most certainly one of them, having put in a sensational campaign under Robins, earning his spot in Craig Bellamy’s Wales setup in the process.

With lovely right foot, the 25-year-old is capable of playing across both flanks, while he is a consistent threat in possession.

He would not be a signing to really move the needle for Toffees fans over the summer, though it would be a smart bit of business for Everton, who are in serious need of an added threat out wide as Iliman Ndiaye continues to carry Moyes’ men on his back at times.

Thomas has proven talismanic for a side that ended the season in 17th, with an incredible record when it comes to his contribution, and there will likely be a host of top flight clubs prepared to vie for his signature this summer.
