Harry Tyrer has been part of a Cardiff City team that has won promotion to the Championship, after joining the Bluebirds from Everton.

Joining Everton as a seven-year-old, Tyrer has long been a goalkeeper highly thought of around Finch Farm.

After impressing in the academy side for a number of years, the shot-stopper went out on his first loan spell with non-league side Chester in 2022-23, and that’s been his Toffees story ever since.

Loans to Chesterfield and Blackpool have followed over the last two seasons, all the while continuing to rack up senior experience in the hope of one day breaking into Everton’s first-team picture.

However, now at the point of his career where regular football is a must, Everton commissioned a permanent transfer for Tyrer in January.

How has Harry Tyrer fared with Cardiff after Everton exit?

Jordan Pickford’s form has been criticised over recent days, with the 32-year-old England international enduring a poor run in between the Everton sticks.

Indeed, he’s shipped six goals in his last three Premier League appearances, with the Toffees losing twice and drawing once in that time period.

That’s left some questioning the longevity of Pickford as Everton’s number one goalkeeper, but if there is to be a competition in that department soon, Tyrer won’t be a part of it.

He signed for Cardiff on a permanent deal in this season’s January window, penning a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Bluebirds.

However, his move to the Welsh capital has come with some early pros and cons for the young goalkeeper.

Tyrer has been a part of a Cardiff side that have won automatic promotion to the Championship this season, having already secured a second-placed finish in League One.

Gaining this experience will be invaluable to his future development, but on the flip side, he’s not played much of a part in it.

In fact, Cardiff’s 5-1 win over Northampton Town on 25 April was Tyrer’s first appearance for the Bluebirds, and indeed his first involvement in a matchday squad since mid-February.

Cardiff set to keep Tyrer in backup role as Trott transfer nears

The main reason for Tyrer’s lack of opportunities at Cardiff since signing for them in January has been down to the presence of Nathan Trott.

A 27-year-old loanee from Copenhagen, the former West Ham academy graduate has been superb for the Bluebirds this season, conceding 41 goals in 41 League One games, as well as keeping 16 clean sheets.

Now, BBC Sport are among a number of news outlets reporting that Cardiff are hopeful of turning his loan deal permanent this summer, with a £1.5million purchase option now available after their promotion.

That looks to be a no-brainer for Cardiff, and if/when that clause is triggered, Trott will undoubtedly start the 2026-27 season as the number one again, blocking any chance for Tyrer to take that spot.

So, Tyrer might have got a promotion on his record this season, but Cardiff may end up proving to be a place where he is unable to get his senior career going after leaving Everton.
