View: Friedkin Group can prove true Everton intention to Moyes with summer spending
Not for the first time, Everton have Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines to thank.
The duo are said to have driven to David Moyes‘ house back in January 2025 to persuade him to return for a second stint in charge, believing he was the man to help lead the club back to glory. Fast forward almost a year and a half, and they have been proven correct.
Just two days prior, Sean Dyche was sacked by The Friedkin Group after indicating he had taken the team as far as he could. Talks were held on the Friday and the following day, Moyes was officially unveiled in front of the press, albeit sporting rather more grey hairs.
Coleman, Moyes’ trusted servant through the latter part of his initial 11 years on Merseyside, and Baines, now an assistant coach, had been placed in temporary charge following Dyche’s departure, but both were unanimous in their view that the Scot was the ideal successor.
Since taking back the reins, the 62-year-old has steered Everton away from relegation danger to the brink of Europe and is now planning for a crucial summer transfer window.

At the time of Dyche’s sacking, the Toffees had been teetering just a point above the Premier League relegation zone. Damningly, they had also won just three of their 19 top-flight matches that season and appeared to be sleepwalking zombie-like toward the abyss.
In the end, Moyes was able to rescue them from their first relegation in 74 years, having instilled a refreshing fighting spirit and, crucially, more quality into his squad. His players were quick to row in behind him, and the fruits of their labour have paid off handsomely.

Spirits are high at Finch Farm. Moyes trusts his squad, and the feeling is mutual. Together, they are pulling in the same direction, with the top-seven spots in their grasp.
According to the Daily Mail, training sessions have been known to stretch to two-and-a-half hours, a length relatively unheard of in a larger modern-day environment more focused on short, sharp drills. However, Moyes’ approach is working.
Ahead of his first full season back, the Scot had targeted European football. Whether he truly believed that was possible is up for debate, but what was once a dream is now a reality.
The last-gasp defeat by Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Sunday afternoon was a tough pill to swallow. Virgil van Dijk’s 100th-minute winner would have been a two-fold dagger because of its brutal decisiveness and the larger effects on Everton’s objectives.
It all but spelt the end of their Champions League quest, but Moyes won’t care which of the three competitions his side qualifies for. The Europa League and Conference League are very much within their reach at the end of a season that has defied all expectations.
Now, the club must stand by him and make a statement.
The squad is packed to the rafters with talent, including the likes of lliman Ndiaye, James Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but the vultures are expected to come circling in the summer. It is crucial that the Friedkins are willing to loosen the purse strings.

Neither Beto nor Thierno Barry have proven themselves as reliable, proven No 9s in the Premier League, and the latter could make way. There will also have to be a refresh at full-back, especially with Coleman’s contract set to run down at the end of the season.
Moyes could also do with more bodies in midfield and out wide.
Big players crucial to David Moyes project
There is bound to be interest in Ndiaye, Garner and Dewsbury-Hall over the coming weeks.
Manchester United, meanwhile, want to sign Jarrad Branthwaite, but will now likely hold off on making an official approach until the severity of his latest knee injury becomes clear. The club believe the talented 23-year-old can become Harry Maguire’s long-term replacement.
The futures of the quartet will also go hand-in-hand with a potential new deal for Moyes. The manager’s current terms are up at the end of the season, and while he would be open to continuing, he will also be demanding a show of commitment and faith from the hierarchy.

According to The Guardian, the club plan to offer Moyes a new contract to recognise his achievements. They had initially only seen him as a short-term appointment, but he has proven them wrong. As a result, formal talks are expected to begin during the summer.
Tellingly, Moyes will also likely be given a big say in recruitment.
Despite ticking into the twilight of his prestigious coaching career, he is seemingly more ambitious than ever before. It now falls to the club to match that.
