Everton and Celtic are seemingly fighting it out for the same transfer target this window.

Everton have yet to finalise any deals this window – both in terms of permanent exits and arrivals – but some movement is expected.

Tim Iroegbunam is the latest to be linked with an Everton exit, while Youssef En-Nesyri is supposedly still an option for David Moyes.

A new striker certainly would not go amiss at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and it may well be that Callum Wilson is the first signing to arrive through the door.

Martin O’Neil speaks out on Everton-linked Callum Wilson transfer speculation

Everton are said to hold an interest in Callum Wilson, who is no longer wanted at fellow Premier League side West Ham United.

There was talk of Wilson being released by the Hammers, but he remains on their books for now and it is likely they will now hold out for a fee.

Celtic have also been credited with an interest in Wilson, but manager Marin O’Neill has now implied they are no longer in the race.

“I can’t tell you anything,” O’Neill said at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon. “For want of telling you, it’s news to me.

But we are in search of those elusive goalscorers. We’re not the only team. On a serious note no, I can’t tell you, but we are making progress.”

Pushed on whether Wilson is on his radar, O’Neil replied: “I hadn’t thought about that. Not that he’s not a fine player, but I thought he was going elsewhere.”

O’Neil effectively admitted that Wilson’s already decided on his next move, which will be music to the ears of David Moyes.

Are Everton alone in showing Wilson interest?

Wilson is clearly a man in demand due to the minimal transfer fee he will demand – if any – with others such as Ipswich Town and clubs in Saudi also being linked.

Everton do not have a free run at the former England international as such, then, but a move to Hill Dickinson Stadium would make sense to all involved.

Beto and Thierno Barry have showed glimpses but are not cut out to lead the Toffees’ line, whereas Wilson has been there, done it and very much got the t-shirt.

Wilson is outperforming Everton’s first-choice strikers

Wilson has scored four Premier League goals this season, despite being given just 810 minutes of action.

While he is not an option for the long term – he turns 34 next month – there is no reason why he cannot do a job for Everton on an 18-month contract.

It seems the striker himself is already set on a move to another club, so let’s hope that is Everton.
