View: Merlin Rohl still in for bright future at Everton despite difficult start
Everton midfielder Merlin Rohl has endured a difficult time during the early days of his career on Merseyside.
The German midfielder joined from SC Freiburg on deadline day and has made just 12 Premier League appearances under David Moyes, with fitness issues and on-pitch struggles seeing the 23-year-old face reduced minutes at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Initially joining on loan, Rohl is set to become a Toffees player permanently soon, with a deal worth around £18million activated once Everton’s Premier League safety is officially confirmed.
Glimpses of his talent have been shown, with the midfielder shining in wins away at Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, though he has largely been limited to minutes off the bench.
Despite his difficult year, though, the future can still be bright for Rohl on Merseyside, with his future set to be sealed.

Merlin Rohl issues statement after difficult Everton year
Joining Freiburg from Ingolstadt in 2022, the Potsdam-born midfielder was highly rated across the Bundesliga.
Then, after an injury-disrupted 2024-25 campaign that restricted Rohl to 19 Bundesliga outings, the current term looked to be his breakout year at the Black Forest club.
Bundesliga Rohl Appearances 19 Started 11 Shots per game 0.6 Key passes per game 0.5 Pass accuracy 78% Tackles per game 0.8
Taking to Instagram, Rohl said: “Coincidence and luck define our lives in so many ways. I am so grateful for the coincidences and the luck that have allowed me to play in this beautiful stadium. For this great club. In front of the eyes of our passionate fans. In the best league in the world.
“So many things that I could not control, and yet here I stand, living my dream of playing in the Premier League,” he added, with the full message available to view below.
Since making the move to Everton, fitness issues have limited his minutes, while his form as of late has kept him away from a starting spot.
Though there is most definitely a player in there, and Everton must now work to develop that.
Everton must now commit – the talent is there for Merlin Rohl
Patience will be essential for the Toffees if they are to justify the upcoming outlay, with it being far from a lost cause when it comes to Rohl’s potential.
At Freiburg, he worked his way into the first team under the iconic Christian Streich, who left the club in 2024 after 12 years as head coach.
Streich himself has previously spoken glowingly of Rohl’s progression, telling Bundesliga.com: “Merlin’s taking big strides after his injury troubles. He’s got pace, great movement. He can be a real difference-maker.”
Capable of playing across multiple positions, the midfielder is incredibly versatile, while his non-stop energy is something valuable for any squad – as showcased by his Sofascore graphic below.

Rohl’s move is set to become permanent over the summer, and with the sizeable fee in mind, the Toffees simply have to place their trust in him, as they look to avoid a situation where his value continues to decrease.
At 23, the potential is still most definitely there, and after a year where he has been kept out of the side for reasons not the fault of his own, Moyes must place trust in him, especially with the potential for more games next season should the Blues qualify for Europe.
