View: Moyes already on track to repeat past heroics at Everton, he deserves more credit
David Moyes has performed wonders again at Everton, but isn’t given enough credit.
The 62-year-old is spearheading a surprise push for Europe at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with the 3-0 victory against Chelsea last time out a third league win in four.
It should not be forgotten that the Toffees haven’t finished in the top half of the Premier League since 2020-21, but this campaign, they are on track to do just that – and more.
Ahead of the race to the finish, the Merseyside club are just three points behind arch rivals Liverpool in fifth, which will almost certainly guarantee Champions League qualification.
While Moyes has been given his flowers for inspiring Everton to a superb run of form, a glimpse at his record in his second spell in charge shows this is no freak accident.

David Moyes enjoying Everton renaissance
Moyes deserves to win the Premier League’s manager of the season award for the job he is doing, and, despite his advancing age, he has proven himself tactically versatile.
In fact, the wily Scot has outfoxed his younger, fresh-faced peers on numerous occasions already, while instilling a drive and belief not seen at Everton for many a year.
Club When Record Points per match Everton 01/25 22-14-18 1.48 West Ham 12/19 – 06/24 103-43-84 1.53 West Ham 11/17 – 05/18 9-10-12 1.19 Sunderland 07/16 – 05/17 8-7-28 0.72 Real Sociedad 11/14 – 11/15 12-15-15 1.21 Manchester United 07/13 – 04/14 26-10-15 1.73 Everton 03/02 – 06/13 221-134-163 1.54 Preston 01/98 – 03/02 107-54-57 1.72
This is clearly reflected in one eye-opening statistic.
Since making his comeback in January 2025, Moyes has earned around 1.48 points per game, while boasting a record of 22 wins, 14 draws and 18 defeats from his 54 matches.
It is, admittedly, a much smaller field to draw from, but that 1.48 figure is only marginally below his tally of 1.54 from his first stint in charge between 2002 and 2013.
The fact that Moyes was previously able to lead Everton into the Champions League and the FA Cup final bodes very well for his current iteration on Merseyside.
If he is able to maintain results from now until the end of the season, the Toffees will almost certainly be playing in Europe next season. The only question is which competition.
Secret of Moyes’ success
Football has become overly complicated in the modern era, but Moyes’ longevity – he is the oldest manager in the Premier League by a long stretch – owes much to simplicity.
Indeed, he has gained a reputation for bagging points while not scoring a boatload of goals, shown by the fact they have scored three fewer than Tottenham but have 16 more points.
He was given a two-and-a-half-year deal by The Friedkin Group after replacing Sean Dyche, meaning talks over extending his stay will have to take place in the not-so-distant future.
It isn’t always pretty, but Moyes guarantees results, and if he leads Everton into the Champions League against all the odds, he should be allowed to write the cheque himself.
