View: Moyes would not be reactionary, Everton ace must start v Crystal Palace

Thierno Barry’s two goals against Manchester City will give David Moyes something to think about ahead of Everton’s next game.

The form of Beto has been keeping the Frenchman out of the starting lineup, and despite the two goals, the Everton boss may be accused of recency bias if Barry is thrown back in this weekend.

For much of the season, the 23-year-old has been frustrating, with a period during December and January being a purple patch in front of goal. The summer signing struck four goals in five games.

But the periods of drought will no doubt still be lingering in the mind of the manager.

Ahead of Everton’s clash against Crystal Palace, Moyes has once again landed himself a selection headache, but has Barry earned enough to get the nod? He may have done so, and here is why.

Why Thierno Barry may be best selection choice against Crystal Palace

It is a toss-up over who gets selected to face Crystal Palace, with Beto and Barry having reasons to starts.

On paper, Barry scoring twice against Man City could give him the momentum needed to go on a mini run to end the season.

Moyes will also have to question whether Barry is more useful as an impact substitute than as a starter. This season, three of the Frenchman’s eight goals have come off the bench, including his double versus Man City.

In fact, only Victor Anichebe in 2011-12 (4) and Oumar Niasse in 2017-18 (4) have scored more as a sub in a single campaign for Everton.

But Barry’s strong prowess in the air with his 6’5″ frame could be crucial against a Crystal Palace defence that is also strong aerially.

In the Premier League, Barry is placed fourth for most aerial duels won (119) as per Sofascore over the course of the season.

His presence could be crucial for the Blues, and his power may be enough to warrant a start alone. Barry’s two goals against Manchester City are simply just a bonus.

Barry must reward David Moyes if selected

Barry has had plenty of chances at Everton this season, and the Frenchman has often struggled to reward his manager.

However, as the season nears an end, he simply must step up with European places on the line for the Toffees.

Another lacklustre performance will further issues that supporters have had with the striker.

At a time when Everton require their stars to step up in big moments, Barry has to show he can be relied upon when it matters most.
