View: Rohl's dilemma as Chris Sutton makes 'different side' claim in Falkirk vs Rangers

Danny Rohl will have to decide whether to stick with a 4-4-2 after Rangers‘ second-half turnaround against Falkirk on Sunday.

Rangers looked set for a disastrous Sunday afternoon, as Falkirk race into a two-goal lead before the half hour mark.

Tochi Chukwuani got a crucial goal back for Gers just before half-time, and meant Rangers went into the interval 2-1 down, but with a renewed sense of belief and energy.

Rohl then rolled the dice at the restart, bringing Mikey Moore off and replacing him with Bojan Miovski, shifting his side into a 4-4-2 formation as a result.

That worked a treat too, as Gers hit Falkirk for five in the second half, and eventually kept their Scottish Premiership title push firmly on track with a 6-3 victory.

What did Chris Sutton say about Rangers formation dilemma?

Rohl and Rangers escaped embarrassment against Falkirk, with Gers’ start to the game nowhere near good enough.

Falkirk are not the sort of side you want to let get their tails up in attack, with their forward line being one of the strongest and most in-form in the division at the moment.

However, Rohl deserves huge plaudits for identifying where his side were going wrong and having the bravery to change it at half-time, despite the fact he could’ve easily left things be after Chukwuani’s goal.

Instead, he dragged Moore off, who didn’t enjoy an impactful first-half performance, and instead of bringing on a wide player for a straight swap, he opted to put striker Miovski on to play up top with Youssef Chermiti.

Both of these two ended up bagging braces in the second half, in a tactical tweak that could well be a watershed decision when the season is all said and done.

Speaking on Sky Sports via BBC Sport, Chris Sutton is now curious as to whether Rohl should indeed stick with a 4-4-2 as the split arrives.

“It’ll be interesting to see if Rangers go 4-4-2 in the next game because they looked a different side,” Sutton said.

Rohl should play the form players and formation for Rangers

This is a tough call for Rohl to make, as he’s largely been sticking by his trusty 4-2-3-1 since being appointed Rangers head coach.

However, it’s now at the stage of the season where it’s all about getting wins, and that can come at the price of individuals’ tactical philosophies.

Rangers were a considerably more potent attacking side in the second half against Falkirk, and whilst they didn’t have as much of the ball, they were far more clinical and ruthless when they were in possession.

Five goals in any half of football against any side in this division is some achievement, not least away from home in a must-win game.

Therefore, whilst it would come at the sacrifice of a player who perhaps doesn’t deserve to be dropped, Rohl surely must look at how his team played when switching to a 4-4-2 and have a hard time feeling that’s not the way forward.
