Thomas Frank earned a crucial win as Tottenham beat Borussia Dortmund.

Frank was on the verge of being sacked following Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham last Saturday, leaving his side 14th in the Premier League and winless in five games.

However, Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday night offers Frank a much-needed reprieve, albeit he’s far from being out of the woods just yet.

Dominic Solanke was preferred over Mathys Tel in Frank’s Champions League squad, and that proved to be a masterstroke, as it was the 28-year-old striker who netted Tottenham‘s second goal of the evening.

It was a huge win over Dortmund on Tuesday, as now Tottenham have a real chance of qualifying for the knockout stages automatically with a top eight finish.

Spurs have one more league phase game to go, which will take place on Wednesday 28 January when Frank takes his side to Germany to play Eintracht Frankfurt.

Tuesday’s victory over Dortmund also saw Tottenham write a new piece of their own Champions League history, and it came from the substitutes bench.

17-year-old defender Jun’ai Byfield entered the fray to replace the injured Lucas Bergvall on 62 minutes, and in the process, he became Spurs’ youngest ever player in the competition.

After the game, Byfield took to his Instagram account to mark not only his record-breaking night, but to also celebrate making his competitive first-team debut for Tottenham.

“Happy to make my first competitive debut especially for it to be in the Champions League. Also happy to become Tottenham’s youngest UCL player,” wrote Byfield.

In response to that, Solanke shared Byfield’s post to his Instagram story, and said: “Congrats bro! Many more to come for sure.”

Jun’ai Byfield’s performance vs Dortmund by the numbers

It would’ve been so easy and totally understandable if Byfield had struggled after coming off the bench against Dortmund, but the Tottenham academy graduate did no such thing.

The teenager didn’t look out of place whatsoever, and it’s not hard to see why he’s so highly-rated at N17 and at international level, having been capped for England at Under-18, 17 and Under-16 levels.

As per Sofascore, Byfield made six defensive contributions against Dortmund, whilst also making four clearances.

He committed just one foul, and enjoyed a 100 per cent pass completion rate for passes in the Dortmund half (3/3), whilst registering an 86 per cent success rate for passes in his own half (6/7).

Byfield took 21 touches, and lost the ball three times, and so on first viewing, he looks every bit of a future first-team player for Tottenham.
