Arne Slot simply must be sacked as Liverpool boss infuriates fans with excuses vs Man City

Arne Slot is walking a very fine line at Anfield, and his comments following Liverpool‘s embarrassing defeat to Man City will do nothing to help.

The Dutchman produced magic during his first season on Merseyside, using Jurgen Klopp’s squad to win the Premier League title, but that achievement has been quickly forgotten.

Sitting fifth in the league table, with a very real chance of missing out on Champions League football next season, and now being knocked out of the FA Cup, fans are only getting more frustrated.

Liverpool fans would welcome Klopp back with open arms, while Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard and even Luis Enrique are all being linked with a move to Merseyside in the summer.

Arne Slot really has used xG as an excuse

With Erling Haaland bagging his 28th career hat-trick and Antoine Semenyo getting in on the action, Slot’s side were taken to the cleaners at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, 4 April.

Dominik Szoboszlai summarised it best when he said that his teammates lacked the mentality needed to compete against the Citizens, but his manager went for a very different approach.

Instead of taking the blame, while speaking in his post-match press conference, he said: “Again, we are facing a team who outperformed their xG by a mile, and that is happening constantly.”

There is a time and a place for Slot to make comments about the opposition’s xG, and that time is not just moments after being thrashed 4-0 to be knocked out of the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Who could FSG bring in as Liverpool boss instead?

As already discussed, multiple options are being discussed on Merseyside, but the favourite for the job is Alonso due to his links to Anfield and his not currently being at a club.

In fact, Keith Wyness revealed to Football Insider that his contacts believe Alonso is waiting to return to Liverpool, and the betting odds would certainly suggest the same.

What is certain is that the Reds need a change of leadership in the dugout, and while it is also needed right now, FSG are unlikely to act before the 2025-26 campaign comes to a close.

It was such an exciting start to the Dutchman’s time in England, but that fairytale has rather quickly taken a dark turn, one that could see him sacked before the season is over.
