The midfielder has been a shining light for the Red Devils this season, popping up with crucial moments of brilliance during the final stages of Amorim’s tenure, and taking on another level since Carrick arrived.

His future had been in doubt earlier in the season, after his comments accusing the Man United board of attempting to sell him to the Saudi Pro League emerged.

But ultimately, Fernandes has reaffirmed his commitment to the club, and he is expected to stay past this summer.

He can do so off the back of breaking an iconic Premier League record, depending on the next nine games.

Thierry Henry’s record of 20 assists in the 2002-03 league season has stood the test of time, with Kevin De Bruyne coming closest when he matched it in the 2019-20 season.

Since returning from injury, Fernandes has recorded seven assists in nine league games. Match that tally over the next nine, and he will create Premier League history.

Man United face a difficult run to the end of the season, but given their rest between games and their form against the bigger opponents this season, Fernandes will be confident.

Villa at home presents the first opportunity, with Unai Emery’s team in poor form, but the midfielder may be looking at Leeds United with keen interest.
