Bruno Fernandes recorded one of his biggest assists yet for Manchester United in their 2-1 away win to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon – and it’s edged him closer to overtaking a club legend who believed he should have been sold in the summer.

Manchester United took to Merseyside looking for their first win against Liverpool away from home in almost 10 years.

It was a seemingly daunting challenge with the Reds having been in good form to start the season, while United hadn’t won back-to-back games in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim.

However, when Bryan Mbeumo struck for United inside 62 seconds, it gave them something to build upon. Liverpool did equalise in the second half through Cody Gakpo to set up a grandstand finish, but United stole all three points when Harry Maguire headed home in front of the away fans to send them into ecstasy.

Bruno Fernandes assist vs Liverpool has taken him to Man United greatness

It was Bruno Fernandes who crossed for the Englishman’s winner, and that saw him once again prove pivotal for United, as he has over the past six years. But crucially, it’s an assist that has taken him to just three behind Paul Scholes in the all-time Premier League leaderboard.

Fernandes has been United’s best player over the past half-decade, make no mistake about it.

Manchester United’s £67.6m capture of Bruno Fernandes in 2020 has proven to be a rare good deal among a series of failed transfers this side of the decade.

And his assist for Maguire in the long-awaited win over Liverpool has seen the Portuguese midfielder move to 52 Premier League assists for United, enough to put him fifth in the all-time list of stars to have graced the Old Trafford turf.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the four ahead of him are Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and Paul Scholes, all of whom were massive stars in United’s halcyon Premier League-winning days under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But the ginger Mancunian may be left with egg on his face in the coming weeks and months if Fernandes overtakes him – which it looks as though he will do.

Man United star Bruno Fernandes will leave Paul Scholes embarrassed after summer comments

Back in the summer, Bruno Fernandes was touted for a move to Saudi Pro League.

Of course, that is a huge amount of money for any player, let alone a 31-year-old who will have seen his value diminish without European football to play.

Despite the Portugal international staying, Scholes urged United to sell Fernandes – citing the midfielder’s confusion at Ruben Amorim’s system as the reason. He said on The Overlap: “They are talking about £100m for him. Man United cannot say no to that.

“I know he has been brilliant and carried the team on his back but where does he actually play, what is his position? Do you see him as a number 10? Do you see him as a holding midfielder?

“He almost confuses the whole system. I mean he has been brilliant don’t get me wrong. But when you’re getting 100m for him you snap your hands and take it.”

It could well be that Fernandes overtakes Scholes in the next few weeks to rub salt in the wound of their 11-time Premier League winner.

It could come soon enough, given that current Manchester United star Amad Diallo has praised Fernandes for his consistent performances.
