Bruno Guimaraes has not been ruled out of Newcastle United’s Premier League match against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Brazil international was forced off with an ankle injury in the closing stages of the first half of Newcastle’s 3-0 win over PSV in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Bruno’s right ankle looked severely swollen in a photo of Newcastle’s players celebrating in the dressing room after the win against PSV, raising doubts over the midfielder’s availability for the game against Villa at St James’ Park this weekend.

But speaking during his press conference on Friday, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe revealed that Bruno remains in contention to play against Villa but warned he will not take any risks with the 28-year-old’s injury.

‘With Bruno we hope it is not serious, the extent of the injury is still unknown,’ Howe said.

‘But he was reasonably positive after the game, speaking to him again, he is the guy that will never rule anything out, we are going to give him every chance for this weekend, so let’s wait and see.’
