Manchester United are closing in on a return to the Champions League as Matheus Cunha’s goal sealed a 1-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday night.

Michael Carrick’s side remain third in the Premier League and have a three-point cushion over Aston Villa and a 10-point advantage over Chelsea, who are in sixth place.

Chelsea have now suffered four Premier League defeats in a row and could be seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool if they beat Everton on Sunday.

Bruno Fernandes played a pivotal role in Cunha’s winning goal as his excellent run and cross on the right found the Brazilian, whose first-time finish beat Robert Sanchez in the 43rd minute.

Fernandes now has 18 assists in the Premier League, two behind the all-time record set in a single campaign by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
