Chris Sutton shares why Moyes 'will probably have a whinge' if Everton target met

Chris Sutton believes that David Moyes could come to regret pushing for European football with Everton.

The Toffees are well in the hunt for Conference League qualification, with their impressive away form pushing them up the Premier League table in recent weeks.

Everton haven’t competed in Europe since the 2017-18 Europa League, in which they finished third in their group and failed to progress to the knockout stages.

Seventh place in the Premier League would likely be enough to see Everton qualify for next season’s Conference League, but Sutton has questioned whether their squad would be able to handle it.

David Moyes quote on Europe

David Moyes would complain about European schedule

Moyes has had squad-depth issues at Everton in the last few months, with a number of key players missing large spells of the campaign.

Iliman Ndiaye went away to the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, and Jack Grealish was recently ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a foot fracture.

Those absences, coupled with the Toffees’ lack of activity in the winter transfer window, has often left Moyes with very few options.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Premier League winner Sutton highlighted that these issues would only get worse if Everton qualified for Europe.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers striker added that Moyes would likely be whinging about the packed fixture schedule.

Sutton said: “David Moyes has said he wants European football, but the squad is pretty thin. Next season, if they get European football, he’ll probably have a whinge about it and say they can’t cope.

“They are a striker away from being a really good team, but like all David Moyes’ teams, they are really well balanced.”

The Friedkin Group must act if Everton achieve European goal

There is no doubt that Moyes would need to strengthen his Everton squad in the summer if they reached the Conference League, and the Friedkin Group would be forced to invest.

Current areas of concern include right-back and striker, but realistically, Moyes would need backup options in all areas to contend with the fixture schedule.

That doesn’t even take into account the scenario in which Everton lose some of their key players, like Ndiaye and Grealish.

Grealish is on loan from Manchester City, and there is still no word on whether that deal will be made permanent.

As for Ndiaye, he has developed into one of the Premier League’s most exciting players this season and will likely receive a lot of interest in the summer.
