Joe Rothwell’s short and unhappy Rangers spell could draw to a close within days.

Rothwell swapped Bournemouth for Rangers last summer, but the move has not gone to plan thus far.

The midfielder has played just eight Scottish Premiership games this season, with it quickly becoming apparent that Rothwell was not well-suited at Rangers.

After a solid year on loan at Leeds United last season, Championship side Sheffield United enquired about Rothwell, but for now, he remains at Rangers.

Rangers are still on the lookout for more signings, and if Rothwell did leave, that could free up funds elsewhere before the winter window shuts on 2 February.

Teams queue up for Rangers flop Joe Rothwell

Rothwell’s contract expires in the summer of 2028, but at this rate, he won’t be at Rangers for much longer in 2026.

The Scottish giants reportedly signed the ex-Southampton loanee for a modest six-figure fee in 2025, and now it seems Rangers want to recoup some of those funds.

According to the Rangers Review, former Manchester United academy player Rothwell will be allowed to leave Govan this month.

Chris Jack adds that three clubs are in discussions with Rangers over a deal for him, with his stock still “high” after his Championship exploits.

As Rangers push for the Scottish Premiership title, it seems Danny Rohl is open to allowing Rothwell to head for pastures new.

It is said that a permanent transfer for Rothwell is the preferred option, and work is ongoing to secure an agreement.

Who else could be coming and going at Rangers?

Rangers are upping their efforts to sign Hansa Rostock striker Ryan Naderi as they try to find that extra piece to help them pip Hearts and Celtic to the title.

Monaco have tried and failed to sign Rangers star Djedi Gassama, with Rohl’s side having no intention of letting the winger go.

Sunderland ace Romaine Mundle has been on Rangers’ radar, but they are yet to secure a breakthrough for the wide man.

Rangers have had to admit defeat on Sunderland’s Dan Neil, with the midfielder set for a loan move to Ipswich Town.

And there may yet be some more business in the coming days as Rangers try to bolster their squad for the second half of the season.
