English media universal with verdict on Everton star Garner after Three Lions bow
James Garner did pretty much all he could as the Everton midfielder made his senior debut for England on Friday night.
The 25-year-old started the 1-1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley and played 69 minutes before being replaced by Kobbie Mainoo.
Garner’s maiden call-up was just reward for the superb form he has shown under David Moyes at club level this season.
And while the versatile midfielder may not have had a goal or assist to show for his work, he still caught the eye in his own way.
Moyes will just be desperate to have Garner fit and available when Everton face Brentford, but the former Manchester United ace will be eager to further impress Thomas Tuchel.

English media all agree on James Garner’s England display
Garner produced what can best be described as a no-nonsense display for England at Wembley on Friday.
It was a low-quality contest relatively speaking, which can so often be the case in these spring friendlies ahead of a major tournament.
Garner’s stats for Everton this season Premier League Matches 31 Goals 2 Assists 6 Big chances created 11 Pass accuracy 88% Recoveries per game 4.9 Tackles per game 3
But while some were simply going through the motions, Garner had a point to prove as he knows a World Cup squad place is there for the taking.
Goodison News has scoured over the ratings from numerous outlets, which range from sixes and sevens out of ten.
The Guardian wrote: “The Everton midfielder delivered some dangerous corners and did not disgrace himself on his debut. 6.”
As for The Mirror, they went with: “Took responsibility for set-pieces and looked eager to impress. Good passing. Decent.”
The general consensus was that Tuchel put his faith in Garner by letting him take set-piece responsibilities, which we all know is a crucial part of modern football.
Indeed, BBC Sport wrote: “The Everton man can be very happy with his first England display. A match that did not have the intensity of a competitive game but Garner did what he needed to do. He was asked to take set-pieces which is a compliment. 6.”

And the Daily Star went with: “Assumed responsibility for set-pieces and appeared keen to impress. Quality passing. Respectable.”
Finally, Goal said: “An impressive debut, providing Uruguay lots to think about with his set-piece delivery and linking the play well.”
Garner now knows what he must do to earn England World Cup place
The fact Garner was on set-pieces can only be a positive. He already has the trust of Tuchel and now it is a case of just doing what he is doing for Everton.
Garner was hailed as “exceptional” by Emma Hayes on ITV’s live coverage of the match, with the former England Women boss a big fan of the midfielder’s tidy play on the ball.

As Hayes said, Garner is the type of player managers love because of his work ethic. That can often sound like a back-handed compliment, but that is not the case in this instance.
Garner was solid rather than spectacular, but this was not the game in which individuals were going to massively shine given the nature of it.
Now it is over to Garner to keep it up and there is no reason why he will not be in Tuchel’s final squad for the United States, Canada and Mexico.
