Everton braced to take 'sackcloth' off in summer transfer market - Kieran Maguire

Kieran Maguire doesn’t believe that Everton are in a financial position that will force them into player sales in the summer transfer window.

Everton seem to be eyeing an ambitious summer of spending ahead of the 2026-27 season, with David Moyes looking primed to kick the Toffees on next term.

Indeed, it’s been a much-improved Premier League campaign so far as opposed to the last few years, with the team sitting eighth in the table with just seven games to go.

With the loan signing of Tyrique George being the only first-team arrival in January, Hill Dickinson Stadium chiefs made it clear then that the priority was preserving funds for the summer.

However, the move to Hill Dickinson was a costly one, and there have been concerns among Everton fans that the Club may need to sell some star players in order to bolster their financial position.

What Kieran Maguire said about Everton needing to sell players

Everton’s recent finance accounts were very positive, with a big increase in turnover recorded, as well as a significant reduction in losses.

As such, there are plenty of indicators pointing towards the Toffees being in their healthiest financial position right now in many years.

Everton’s most saleable assetsPotential transfer value
Iliman NdiayeApprox £70-80m
James GarnerApprox £50-60m
Jarrad BranthwaiteApprox £60-70m

However, that doesn’t mean that they won’t be taking phone calls on transfer interest in their star players this summer, as serious offers will still have to be listened to.

The likes of an Iliman Ndiaye or James Garner could bank TFG (The Friedkin Group) some major paydays, and could enable them to really pump significant funds back into the team.

But, speaking with Royal Blue on YouTube, football finance expert Maguire doesn’t think Everton will need to sell any key assets this summer if they don’t want to.

“No. I think Everton, who have paid a heavy price for the, should we say the missteps of the (Farhad) Moshiri era,” Maguire said.

“In three of the last four seasons, Everton have had a negative net spend as far as player recruitment is concerned. I think that particular anchor to which the Club has had to apply, no longer applies.

“So that’s going to work in its favour. It’s six seasons now since Everton spent more than £100million, and for me, that’s sort of a benchmark for an average level of spend.

“I think Everton have worn the sackcloth following the issues under the Moshiri regime, that can now come off, and they’re in a much stronger position this summer.

“As well as the fact that it is the final year of Profitability and Sustainability, so you’ll move to that new environment from 1 July.”

TFG have huge summer chance to transform Everton’s team

So, with seemingly no pressure to sell star players and in a strong financial position to invest in the playing squad further, now is the time for TFG to really take Everton to a new level.

With the potential for the Toffees to be in Europe in 2026-27 growing with each passing win, the balance of power on Merseyside has never felt as close to changing hands as it does now.

Liverpool are in a bit of a mess at the moment, and given that they’re only three points ahead of Everton, there’s a very real chance they could finish below the Toffees this term.

That’s a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since the 2012-13 season, but with a big summer window in the making, TFG could do much to ensure this has the chance of becoming a more regular occurrence moving forward.
