Beto has taken a lot of flak from Everton supporters so far this season.

The misfiring striker has struggled to hit the heights expected from him for the Hill Dickinson Stadium side.

He was linked with an exit in the winter transfer window, but ultimately remained on Merseyside for the rest of the season.

The Guinea-Bissau forward could still be the solution for Everton as they chase Europe in the final few weeks of the campaign.

What did Brentford chief say about Everton star Beto?

Brentford owner Matthew Benham is well known for his sports analytics and gambling background, which has helped him build the Bees into an established Premier League outfit.

He used the Blues forward as an example of the data, highlighting that a player is a lot better than the average observer believes, which could make Everton fans realise what they have in Beto.

Speaking at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston last week, in quotes reported by Training Ground Guru on 9 March, he said: “For a striker, getting in position is way more informative than finishing.

“When we played Everton at our place late last year, Beto missed three one-on-ones, any model worth its salt would give Beto an upgrade.

“Any player who manages to make three one-on-ones in a single game, even if he happens to miss them, he’s got to get an upgrade.

“Obviously, your man in the street would slate him.”

What do the numbers say about Beto this season?

Beto has notched four goals in the league this season, and is scoring once every 273 minutes, per Sofascore.

His average expected goals for the campaign in 6.45, suggesting that he actually should have two more goals on his tally, and that ranks as the 17th best figure in the league.

He has a conversion rate of 14 per cent, which ranks him as the 30th best striker in the division and takes 2.28 touches in the opposition box per 90 minutes.

He boasts a 62 per cent pass completion rate, which is not the worst for an attacking player, as there is a lot of pressure when you get nearer to the opposition area.

The 28-year-old is willing to help out defensively, making 0.4 tackles per game, 0.8 recoveries per game and one clearance per game.

Beto’s physicality and workrate goes under the radar, and it could be vital as David Moyes’ side chase qualification for European football next season.

He has been unlucky in front on goal, but as Benham stated, he is getting in the right positions, which is a positive sign.

Now, he just needs to be more clinical when he gets in front of the net, Blues fans need to be patient.
