Everton in ‘advanced talks’ to agree £17m-a-year-sponsor deal

Everton are in advanced negotiations over a deal that will see foreign exchange trader CMC Markets on the front of their shirts.

The Toffees are looking to replace Stake, in line with the Premier League’s rules on gambling sponsors on the front of shirts, which will come into effect next season.

The ban has reportedly left much of the league desperately scrambling to find sponsors in the closing months of this season.

Several are set to begin the next campaign without front-of-shirt sponsors, with nine clubs yet to secure deals.

Everton chiefs have moved quickly to agree a deal themselves, which should see the Toffees earn a financial boost.

Everton close to securing new deal

Former chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider this week that Everton deserved a bigger sponsor than the deal that is close to being agreed with CMC Markets.

There had been rumours that Japanese car manufacturing giant Toyota were interested in a deal with the Toffees, but it appears that such murmurs were mere speculation.

Everton’s deal with CMC Markets is expected to earn them around £50million over the course of three years, a slight increase on their previous agreement.

And the Toffees can be glad to have something lined up, with many clubs in the Premier League unable to say the same.

According to The Guardian, nine top-flight clubs have yet to secure front-of-shirt deals ahead of next season, with 12, including Everton, yet to sign contracts.

Fulham are also in advanced talks with CMC Markets, while Bournemouth and Brentford have agreed deals with sponsors that already appeared elsewhere for them.

But the likes of Newcastle and Chelsea are still without front-of-shirt sponsors, with the collective loss of income from shirt deals expected to be as high as £80m.

Stake to move to Everton sleeves

The Premier League is yet to ban gambling sponsors on sleeves, with Stake set to become Everton’s sleeve sponsor next season.

There could be a further crackdown on betting advertisements in the future, however, with the Government’s football regulator set to look into the situation.

Gambling firms not licensed in the UK could be banned from sponsoring sports teams in the country, it was revealed in February.

And further action could be incoming in the coming years as more methods to prevent gambling are sought.
