Everton make approach for new signing ahead of Aston Villa clash - report
Everton have expressed an interest in signing Patrick Wimmer.
Everton have yet to sign anyone in January, despite their lack of depth being exposed over the last few weeks, mainly due to Iliman Ndiaye and Idrisa Gueye featuring at AFCON.
David Moyes is in need of reinforcements at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with attacking signings likely to be a priority.
As a result, the Toffees have identified Wimmer as a potential target to rectify some of those concerns amid a fresh update from Germany.
Patrick Wimmer attracting ‘strong attention’ at Wolfsburg
Everton‘s depth on the wings is certainly lacking, with Dwight McNeil and Tyler Dibling failing to showcase their worth this season.
With Ndiaye in the final of AFCON at Senegal, their lack of quality in that area has been exposed badly.
Now, the Toffees are said to be keen on signing Wimmer from Wolfsburg, with Rudy Galetti reporting via his substack that there is “strong attention” from Premier League clubs.
It’s claimed that talks are not yet at an advanced stage, but they are expected to progress in the coming days.
Wolfsburg are said to be open to his departure, but only if a “convincing” offer is made for the winger who has started 13 times in the Bundesliga this season.
Former Southampton manager has already said why Everton should sign Wimmer
Everton have three options on the right flank, but only really have Jack Grealish to play on the left.
The arrival of Wimmer would change that, given the fact that he has featured there regularly throughout his time at Wolfsburg, and to good effect.
Back in March last year, Wimmer scored a brace to secure a 2-1 win away to Werder Bremen, with Ralph Hasenhuttl full of praise for his performance.
Wimmer’s all-time stats at Wolfsburg in all competitions.
- 94 appearances
- 13 goals scored
- 17 assists
The former Saints and Wolfsburg manager said: “He is incredibly dynamic and always difficult to defend against. He wins a lot of balls, and his pace creates dangerous counter-attacks.”
All of those attributes are very similar to Ndiaye, for whom Everton have looked lost since his trip to represent his country.
Having two pacey wingers on either flank would massively increase the risk posed by Everton’s offensive outlet, with a decision likely to be made in the next few days.
