Everton Women confirm fresh injury blow as ACL setbacks mount up

Everton Women have confirmed that Inma Gabarro is set for a long spell on the sidelines due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

After four straight Women’s Super League wins, Scott Phelan’s side have come unstuck in their last two outings.

A stoppage-time winner from Melvine Malard secured Manchester United a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Everton on 21 March, and then on Saturday, they fell to a disappointing 3-2 loss to rivals Liverpool.

Three first-half goals from Liverpool put Gareth Taylor’s team on the path to an easy win, before an Aurora Galli free-kick and a Grace Fisk second yellow set up an intriguing finish at Goodison Park.

Zara Kramzar scored late on, but Everton couldn’t find a way through against their neighbours.

And to make matters worse, they lost Gabarro to injury early in the first half, with the 23-year-old now out for the season.

Worrying injuries mount for Everton

Back in January, it was revealed that Everton midfielder and Danish international Karen Holmgaard had suffered an ACL injury.

The 27-year-old sustained the issue during Everton’s FA Cup win over West Brom earlier that month, with Holmgaard successfully undergoing surgery in early March.

Now, Gabarro – who has two goals to her name for Everton this season – is set for a long spell on the sidelines after suffering another ACL blow.

Indeed, back in October 2024, the Spain international sustained an ACL injury in what could be a worrying trend for the youngster.

After Everton took to social media on Tuesday to confirm the news, Liverpool also wished her a speedy recovery.

It remains to be seen when she will return, but Gabarro, who only returned from her previous ACL injury late last year, may not be back until 2027.

Everton brought back down to earth

After sacking manager Brian Sorensen in February, interim Everton boss Phelan won three on the spin as they rose to sixth in the table.

They showed plenty of fight against United, but the manner of the defeat to Liverpool, who sit 10th in the division, was disappointing.

And while Phelan, who wanted his Everton players to embrace the Liverpool game, was happy with his team’s second-half performance, the first was simply not good enough.

He told Everton TV: “You can’t be talking about half of games. We need to step onto the pitch with more intent.

“And we need to get to our idea in the game a bit earlier and quicker and show what we’re about.”

Phelan added there was too much “fear” amongst his players in the first half. He will look to put that right in their next game against Chelsea on 26 April.
