Ex-Aston Villa chief: Morgan Rogers won't be sold, but five of his teammates could be instead

Aston Villa can only keep Morgan Rogers at the club if they qualify for the Champions League this season.

That is according to former Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, on the club’s summer transfer plans.

The Villans look set to have to sell players this summer in order to comply with the Premier League’s financial rules, and Rogers is one of the club’s most prized assets.

Champions League qualification could boost revenue at Aston Villa, and Unai Emery’s side are currently on track to achieve a top four finish in the league table.

Emery would look to strengthen his Aston Villa side in the summer regardless of whether they qualify for the Champions League, and squad depth could be key to balancing domestic and European ambitions next season.

Aston Villa to make ‘big move’ this summer

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes up to six Aston Villa players could be sold this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the Aston Villa fan base would not be disappointed to see any player, but Rogers, leave the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “If they qualify for the Champions League, then that will hopefully stop the Morgan Rogers type sale that would have to be done. 

“There are five or six players that I don’t think would be missed that much within the Villa squad. And they could still raise some value, and that would be good to freshen up the squad.

“It’s avoiding those sorts of sales like a Morgan Rogers. That is the big move for Villa. That’s why the Champions League is so important and that they keep building for the future, bringing in some younger talent and freshen up the squad.

“There could be at least four or five that could go. And I don’t think the fans would complain about any of them, and they could be replaced at a reasonable level and make Villa even better. It’s the Champions League, I’m afraid, that’s what it’s all about.” 

Aston Villa prepared to cash in on duo

Aston Villa could plan to accept offers on Ollie Watkins and Amadou Onana this summer, Football Insider has been told.

Everton could make a move for Watkins, whilst Onana has been on Man United’s radar following a series of impressive displays in Aston Villa’s midfield.

Thirty-year-old Watkins has not been prolific in-front of goal this season, and the January addition of Tammy Abraham hints at the club wanting to improve their options in attack.

Meanwhile, a big offer for Onana could tempt Aston Villa into a sale, in what would strengthen their hand in the transfer market to sign players.
