Ex-PL club chief hails Liverpool fans as Fenway Sports Group may be forced into U-turn

Liverpool’s strong protest against ticket price increases could force the ownership to U-turn on their decision.

That is the view of former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, after Liverpool fans showed their disapproval of the price hikes against Crystal Palace last time out.

Supporters held yellow cards in the 13th minute of the game, whilst there was also an urge for fans not to spend money inside the stadium.

In March, Liverpool announced that prices would increase in line with inflation over the next three seasons, meaning the club could earn around £1.2million extra in revenue each year.

Liverpool are in a strong financial position under the ownership of Fenway Sports Group, and the club posted record revenues in their latest set of accounts.

Liverpool praised for ‘well organised’ ticket price protest

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Liverpool’s protest can not be ignored by the owners.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness states that the fans made their presence felt on the issue.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The Liverpool fans have got form for making Fenway Sports change their decisions on ticketing prices, and I’ve got to say I was very impressed with how well organised this protest was.

“They had over 75,000 yellow cards handed out around the stadium for the fans, and it was a really impressive show that the Fenway Sports owners could not have ignored in any way, shape or form. And this not a pound in the ground campaign has been well-organised.

“Overall, I’ve got to say hats off to the fans for making their presence felt. It’s something that Fenway Sports may have to do a U-turn on again. They’ve got to take the fans with them on that. What was interesting was the protest with the yellow cards was done in the 13th minute.

“That’s because they thought overall it was going to be a 13% increase over the period of time. That’s a lot. That’s more than, if we’re saying 4% a year for three years, that’s inflation, then that’s still a hefty increase.”

Crystal Palace star impresses against Liverpool amid transfer interest

Liverpool’s revenue is expected to be spent in the transfer market to help manager Arne Slot rebuild the squad this summer.

Slot is now expected to remain as Liverpool boss next season, with the Reds on course for Champions League qualification.

With Curtis Jones’ future uncertain, Slot could target a new midfielder, with former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown telling Football Insider that Adam Wharton remains high on Liverpool’s transfer list.

It comes after Wharton impressed in midfield against Liverpool, and the 22-year-old has the ability and potential to make an impact at Anfield.
