Expert: Celtic plot move to sign Liverpool star on a free transfer

Celtic are keeping tabs on the contract situation of Andy Robertson at Liverpool and could make a move to land him on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at Anfield at the end of the season and there is a growing feeling he will be allowed to leave the club for free.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Martin O’Neill‘s side “would love” to sign Robertson but will not be alone in their pursuit.

A number of European clubs are believed to be keeping a close eye on his situation as he aims to explore a new challenge away from the Premier League.

This comes after Atletico Madrid were interested in Robertson during the summer, but failed to get a deal over the line before the window closed.

Celtic set sights on Liverpool’s Andy Robertson

Football Insider revealed on 28 October that Liverpool have not yet agreed terms with Robertson, but remain hopeful of extending his contract.

However, Milos Kerkez is seen as the first choice their left-back position and there is a growing expectation the Scotland international could move on.

It looks like Robertson will be leaving Liverpool,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Liverpool seem to have accepted that they’ve had the best of him and now is the time to move on, with Kerkez obviously brought in for that reason.

“I could see him making the return to Scotland, it makes sense at this point in his career.

“He would be a great player for Celtic, who I expect are keeping a close eye on things in case he does become available and they can bring him in.

“I don’t think a new left-back is a priority there, but if a player like him becomes available and he would be open to the move, they can’t ignore it.

“They won’t be the only ones interested though and they’ll probably have to battle with European clubs if they want to bring him in.

“But he’s a player who would do well for Celtic and do well in Scotland, and maybe the chance to go back to his home country will appeal to him.”

Martin O’Neill hopes for a busy end to the window

Celtic have made just one signing in the January transfer window so far, despite O’Neill’s desire to bolster his squad in pursuit of winning the SPFL title.

Football Insider revealed on 9 January that O’Neill hopes to sign a striker and centre-back before the window closes as they are seen as problem positions.

Sources say injuries to Kelechi Iheanacho and Cameron Carter-Vickers will force Celtic to be active in the transfer market in search of replacements.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 11 January that Celtic are working overtime to identify targets as they eye “top-class” additions before the window closes.

Despite a slow start, the interim boss hopes he will be backed before the end of the month with the addition of some important players.
