Expert: Rangers plot move to sign 'the best Scottish talent' after scouting mission

Rangers have set a focus on signing the best young talent emerging in Scotland as part of a long-term plan to revamp their squad under Danny Rohl.

The Ibrox club have changed their transfer strategy in recent years with a renewed focus on developing young talent, and scouts have been keeping watch across Europe.

There is now a feeling that there is great value to be found in Scotland despite likely facing competition from clubs south of the border.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that developing young stars will boost both Rangers and the Scotland national team long-term.

This comes amid interest in multiple Scottish Premiership talents including the likes of Luke Graham and David Watson, who are both part of Rangers’ transfer plans.

What is Rangers’ long-term plan for the future?

There is also a focus on developing their own academy stars at Ibrox, as Football Insider revealed Rangers are delighted with Findlay Curtis’ progress since leaving on loan.

The 19-year-old recently made his first appearance for Scotland in their 1-0 defeat against Japan, but has underlined the long-focus on youth at Rangers.

Rangers don’t have a great record of signing Scottish talents.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, scouts have been keeping an eye on developing stars across Scotland, with hopes of improving on their recent record.

“The transfer market is always difficult for Rangers,” Brown told Football Insider.

“They’re limited financially and it’s difficult to attract players to Scotland when most of the time they’ll have competition from clubs in the Premier League.

“So when you look at the options available to them, they have to look closer to home.

“There is real value to be found in signing Scottish players, young players who are impressing in that division who you know can make the step up.

“Playing for Rangers is obviously different to playing for a team like Kilmarnock, for example, in terms of the pressure, but they already know the league.

“But when you look at players who Rangers have signed recently, it’s mostly fringe players in Europe or Championship players making the move from England.

“Now, Rangers want to sign the best Scottish talent to come and develop and turn into the level of player they’re going to be after long-term.

“Their scouts will be keeping a close eye on which players are coming through, who is impressing in the Premiership and even lower down than that.

“It’s something that would benefit the national team as well, having these players playing at a higher level, so it works for all parties really.”

Which Scottish talents are on Rangers’ radar?

Rangers are keeping an eye on multiple emerging talents in the Scottish Premiership, with one in particular catching their eye ahead of the summer window.

Football Insider revealed last month that Rangers and Celtic want to sign Watson from Kilmarnock and have been impressed with his displays this season.

Interest has also emerged from a number of clubs in the English Championship, with the midfielder set to see his contract expire at the end of the season.

His likely availability as a free agent has placed clubs including Rangers on alert, and they are hopeful of luring him to Ibrox as part of their new transfer plan.

Sources have indicated that Watson would love the opportunity to play in the Champions League as part of his next move, and that could end up being the difference.
