Expert: Two Man United stars close to permanent exits

Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund are edging closer to leaving Manchester United in the summer transfer window.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes the sales of the two players is “good news” financially for the club.

Barcelona are expected to pay £26million for Rashford when his loan spell with the Spanish club expires at the end of the season, whilst Napoli could purchase Hojlund for up to £38m.

Man United will look to sell fringe players in the summer to free up space in their wage bill, with the Red Devils also targeting additions to strengthen their squad if they qualify for the Champions League.

Man United to make sales ‘without any big losses’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Man United will view the sales of Rashford and Hojlund as “successful.”

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the pair will “prove that they’ve still got talent” when they leave Old Trafford.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, I think when you look at it, basically both together, because Rashford was an academy product, it’s all profit what they get from Barcelona.

“And with what they’re talking about for Hojlund right now as well, that sort of pays of Hojlund’s initial fee. So they’ve covered that.

“So in that sense, yes, they’ve managed to cover those mistakes or, I know if you can call them mistakes, but certainly they were things that didn’t quite work out for United. They’ve managed to get away without any big losses there. So that’s good news for United.

“And I think in that sense, it’s enough. And certainly, I think both players will go on to prove that they’ve still got talent. But I think in terms of United’s bookkeeping, I think that will be a result, and they’ll view that as successful rather than actually losing money on some of these names.”

This is how Marcus Rashford deal could be structured

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Man United could demand an extra £1.5m from Barcelona to spread the cost of Rashford’s deal over multiple years.

Barcelona would like to pay the fee for Rashford, who has scored four goals in 23 La Liga appearances this season, in instalments over three years.

The 28-year-old has made it clear he will not return to Old Trafford no matter who becomes the next permanent manager after being out of favour under Ruben Amorim.
