Expert: West Ham 'overpaid' for completed signing

West Ham may have got their January recruitment all wrong in the midst of a Premier League relegation battle.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who is doubtful that Taty Castellanos is the right player for West Ham in their current situation.

Castellanos joined West Ham from Lazio in a £26million deal to become their second January signing after striker Pablo Felipe.

West Ham’s 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest saw Castellanos and Felipe both make their first appearances for the club, in a loss which leaves the Hammers in the relegation zone.

West Ham signings questioned

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – reveals that West Ham paid over the release clause for Castellanos.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the signing of Felipe means the Hammers won’t be getting a “prolific goalscorer.”

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, I just mentioned about certain categories of strikers and when you’re paying that sort of money for a striker, you ain’t going to get the finished article, obviously, and you ain’t going to get prolific goalscorers.

“Would it have been better to have got one at the 50 million mark? I also believe that West Ham have overpaid for Castellanos in particular. I think that there was a release clause from, what I understand, that was lower than the amount they paid, and I didn’t see a big queue of clubs waiting to sign him.

“He can be very, what can I say, sporadic, inconsistent is what I would say. He can be knocking in a hat-trick and then disappear for the next five games. And I think that they’ve overpaid at that price for him. And I don’t think you’re going to get the quality that West Ham need in a relegation battle.”

West Ham set for further transfer movement

West Ham are prepared to terminate Callum Wilson’s contract at the club, following recent incomings at the London Stadium.

The club could be set for more departures if they are relegated to the Championship come the end of the season.

Jarrod Bowen could be among the stars to leave West Ham, whilst manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s future is also uncertain.
