Ferguson Exclusive: Rohl isn't stupid, this is the exact player he needs at Rangers

Rangers are still looking to do more business in the January transfer window.

Andreas Skov Olsen was announced as a new Rangers player at Ibrox before they beat Annan Athletic 5-0 in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on Friday.

Tochi Chukwuani and Tuur Rommens have also joined in January, and there is huge optimism that each of the three new players can hit the ground running.

Motherwell star Tawanda Maswanhise could also be on his way to Ibrox, while winger Damir Redzic has similarly been linked with a move to G51.

However, Derek Ferguson believes that Danny Rohl has to do a better job when targeting certain players.

Derek Ferguson urges Danny Rohl to sign Scottish players

Rohl has done an excellent job at Rangers since he was appointed by Andrew Cavenagh, and he has led the Bears into a Scottish Premiership title race.

However, former Gers player Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News that Rohl needs to prioritise signing Scottish players for the long-term future.

He said: “It’s so incredibly important that Rangers have players and staff members who know the core of the club. Rohl isn’t stupid and will be aware that he needs that. It’s so important.

“People dismiss it, but it matters. The mentality matters. I used to have to influence the English guys who came up to get that message across of what Rangers Football Club is all about.

“That has been missing for too long, and it’s something Barry [Ferguson], who was in the job for a few months, has also acknowledged.

“I talk about mentality, but we tend to forget there are good players kicking about here and it’s on us to go and get them.”

Rangers’ current crop of Scottish players aren’t viewed favourably by Rohl

Lyall Cameron was one of the breakout stars in the Scottish Premiership last season, but he hasn’t been given much of a chance under Rohl.

He has since moved out to Aberdeen on loan where he can experience more minutes on the pitch.

Findlay Curtis has featured slightly more, making 23 appearances and scoring three goals, although fans are still left wondering why he has been snubbed for the likes of Thelo Aasgaard and Oliver Antman in the early parts of the season.

Stats regarding Rangers’ squad

When you add Bailey Rice into the equation, a 19-year-old player with bags of talent who could be allowed to leave on a free transfer at the end of the campaign, it doesn’t make for good reading.

Only John Souttar and Connor Barron receive regular game time, and this problem has to be addressed.

Rangers used to pride themselves on bringing through some of the best talents Scotland had to offer.

However, in this new era under the 49ers, that seems to be the very last thing on their mind.
