Finance expert: Man United suffer '£20m' blow as true cost of sacking revealed

Man United are set for another financial blow after sacking manager Ruben Amorim with 18 months left on his contract.

That is according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who has exclusively told Football Insider that Man United have lost around £20million they could have spent elsewhere.

Amorim was sacked as Man United manager with the Red Devils outside the Champions League spots, and having finished 15th last season.

Man United’s financial position shows a huge amount of debt is continuing to build at the club, and Amorim’s exit may not have helped matters.

Man United hit by £100m blow

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley states that Man United have lost a “considerable amount of money” on sacking managers in recent seasons.

“Well, it’s another cost, certainly,” Plumley said.

“You know, if you look at the estimates of what his contract was worth reportedly and what’s left on it, when he was sacked, it’s probably going to cost them £10m to £12m.

“You know, they paid £8m, or around that, wasn’t it to bring him in. So, you know, you’re up to a kind of net cost of £20m in that scenario. So £10m or £12m for a club like Manchester United, the revenues are up around £700m if you look at comparing across Europe in euros, so it’s not going to hurt them too much in the bigger picture, but it’s still a cost you’ve got to pay, and it’s a cost you didn’t plan to pay.

That money then has to be spent there, when it could have potentially been spent elsewhere. Again, and you’ve seen the reports, I think since Sir Alex Ferguson, we’re up to around £100m in sacking of managers and senior staff.

“It’s a considerable amount of money, and it’s something that will hit them again this time around.”

Man United’s managerial candidates

Man United’s search for Amorim’s permanent successor has begun, with the club firstly looking to install a caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Michael Carrick is well-placed to become caretaker boss at Man United, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also in the running.

Oliver Glasner is a leading contender for the permanent Man United job, following his successful spell at Crystal Palace.
