Finance expert shares 'disturbing' PL trend after looking at £8.6m Everton loss

Kieran Maguire feels sorry for Everton following the club’s latest published accounts for the 2024-25 season, which show a collective trend of losses in the Premier League.

The Toffees recently published accounts for last season, which showed what the club described as a “significantly reduced loss” of £8.6million.

The previous campaign saw the Blues’ total losses of £53.2m, and while the overall sum has been cut down, there are still losses evident.

On a positive note, the Friedkin Group saw a club-record turnover of £196.7m, which was a £9.8m increase on the 2023-24 season.

However, Maguire still feels sorry for Everton, in regard to the cards they have been dealt in the past.

Everton’s accounts did show a big improvement, and with the hopes of European football still intact, they could be set for another increase in the future.

But with the Premier League now transitioning to the Squad Cost Ratio limit, it will be interesting to see how the Toffees can adapt amid their continuous yearly losses.

The Toffees did see a big improvement in their annual losses, but it’s important not to forget the transaction of Everton Women and other Goodison Park Stadium entities that helped bring in almost £50m.

Maguire said: “I’ve got a lot of sympathy for Everton. Their wage bill is no higher than seven or eight years ago, half of that of the elite brands in the Premier League, and yet they’ve had a points deduction.

“They’ve lost money, but the disturbing thing is that all of the clubs [in the Premier League] are losing money.”

Given that the Premier League is arguably the biggest and most-watched division in the world, it’s concerning that owners are still walking away with losses at the end of a season.

TFG running risk that Everton supporters won’t mind

Though the summer transfer window had its ups and downs, a lot of money was spent. A combined fee of over £60m was spent on Tyler Dibling and Thierno Barry alone, which will go towards Everton’s overall losses.

The Friedkin Group are still making a huge revenue, and that’s been shown in a new club record for the £196m turnover.

The Blues probably wouldn’t have any losses on their books if they had not spent in the summer, but it’s a risk the owners want to take to help the club move forward.

It’s unlikely that the Toffees will breach the PSR rules again, especially with SCR coming into play soon, and so the spending is justified by ambition.
