Super Eagles star breaks silence on Werder Bremen future amidst ongoing relegation battle

Super Eagles and Werder Bremen left-back Felix Agu has spoken about his future at Weser Stadion as his contract at the club edges closer to its end, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 26-year-old has played just 10 games for Daniel Thioune's side this season, starting eight. This has largely been influenced by injury problems, as he's missed over 130 days of action, no thanks to ankle and adductor injuries.

Werder Bremen haven't had a great campaign in the Bundesliga. Die Grün-Weißen have won just seven of 28 top-flight matches, and are just three points above the relegation zone.

Felix Agu breaks silence on his Werder Bremen future

Now back to full fitness, the Germany-born Nigerian defender is hopeful of continuing in the German top-flight with Werder beyond this season, amidst their battle for safety.

“If it should come like this, I have a contract for the 2. Bundesliga. But of course we want to avoid a relegation at all costs,” Agu said in an interview with Deichstube.

“We have it in our own hands. I think we've offered a lot in the last few games. That makes me feel positive that we still get enough points, leave at least three teams behind us and hopefully not have to tremble for too long.

“Those are definitely six-point games that can give us the biggest boost. These are important games for the head. At the Derby we also have something to make amends.

“But now we focus on Cologne, which we also want to beat. But even after that, there are still points to be scored.

“No team, except maybe Bayern, is unbeatable. That's why I don't see us in the games after that without a chance.

The defender's contract at the Weser Stadion runs out in the summer of 2027, and he's revealed there's been no contract talks yet, even though he'd love to stay at the club.

“Yes, there was already an exchange, but not yet really concrete. We've spoken already, and they've told me they want me to stay.

“I don't know yet. I obviously feel pretty comfortable here. At the end of the season, I've been with Werder for six years.

“You don't stay that long for no reason. That’s why I’m relatively relaxed, wait for the end of the season and then sit down with those in charge again,” Felix Agu concluded.

Felix Agu made his Super Eagles debut back in May 2025, and while he has been called up other times to the Nigerian National team, he has yet to get minutes.
