'Good fit' - Derek Ferguson shares SPFL club Tavernier could possibly join next

Rangers captain James Tavernier could potentially sign for Motherwell as a free agent in the upcoming transfer window.

The right-back will end a glorious 11-year career at the Gers once his contract expires at the end of the season.

Tavernier has had interest from countries like Greece in recent months, but former Light Blues midfielder Derek Ferguson believes Fir Park would be the right place for the 34-year-old next.

The Steelmen have been playing excellent football under Jens Berthel Askou and the Glaswegian outfit’s defender could follow the likes of Craig Paterson, Bobby Russell and Davie Cooper by moving to North Lanarkshire.

For now, Tavernier will be fully focused at Ibrox as the Govan side have an opportunity to win number 56 by beating Hearts and Celtic to the William Hill Premiership title post-split.

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

James Tavernier will be missed at Rangers

Speaking on Open Goal on 23 April, Ferguson said, “I’ll tell you a good fit for him, Motherwell. Because there has been previous with Rangers players going to Motherwell. Of course, the money isn’t going to be there, but it’s what he wants. Maybe money isn’t his god. Maybe he just wants to play. There’s been Craig Paterson, the Bobby Russells, the Davie Coopers who’ve gone there.”

Tavernier has enjoyed a magnificent spell at the Gers, becoming the highest-scoring defender in British football’s history.

The veteran defender captained the Light Blues to their first league title in 10 years under Steven Gerrard during the 2020-21 campaign.

Despite the right-back’s diminishing game time in recent years, he has been pivotal for Danny Rohl, scoring eight goals, providing four assists and creating 17 big chances in the league.

Tavernier could end his career at Ibrox on a high by lifting silverware this season and that will only add to his remarkable legacy in Govan.

Max Aarons highlights difficult task on hand at Ibrox

Rangers must have surely hoped Max Aarons would be able to replace Tavernier, but it would be surprising to see them extend the Bournemouth loanee’s stay beyond this season.

Dujon Sterling has done well whenever he has played, but his persistent fitness issues are a problem for the Glaswegian outfit.

Andrew Cavenagh and the recruitment department arguably have a tough task on their hands to find Tavernier’s successor at the Gers.

The captain has rarely seen anyone threaten his place in the Govan side’s starting lineup, and the hierarchy now need to get the next signing right.
