Henry Winter reveals Tottenham's minimum financial losses if relegated as 'fight' questioned

Henry Winter believes Tottenham Hotspur are getting relegated unless the players “show some fight”, whilst also revealing that Spurs will lose a minimum of £150million if they go down.

Indeed, Winter will be far from the only person questioning the spirit and commitment levels present in this Tottenham team.

Sunday’s defeat against Nottingham Forest certainly didn’t provide much evidence for there being adequate levels of such, as Igor Tudor collected his fifth loss from his seven games in caretaker charge so far.

Tottenham now sit just one point and place above the relegation zone heading into the international break, and it’s becoming harder and harder to see where the points are coming from between now and the end of the season.

Relegation to the Championship would come with massive financial losses for Tottenham, and now Winter – a widely renowned football journalist – has informed the Lilywhites of just how much they can expect to lose at a minimum.

What did Henry Winter say about Tottenham’s players?

Tottenham fans reacted furiously to the Forest loss, and understandably so too, as this was a game that their team simply couldn’t afford to lose.

But not only were they beaten by Forest in this huge relegation six-pointer, they went out with a whimper in the second half, showing precious little steeliness and hunger to fight for a result.

As such, the international break probably couldn’t have arrived at a better time for Tottenham, as it at least gives Tudor – if he’s not sacked, that is – and the players chance to take stock of their situation, and find solutions.

However, as perfectly summarised by Winter in a lengthy post via his X account on Monday, the first thing everyone in that Spurs dressing room needs to do first is look themselves in the mirror.

“Tottenham Hotspur are going down unless they show some fight. Spurs fans played their part backing the team, giving the squad that powerful greet before the Forest game,” Winter said.

“A few players like Archie Gray play their part, fighting for the cause, a 20-year-old showing more commitment than some senior players. It’s not about ability or reputation now, it’s concentration and commitment.

“It’s about fight. Forest showed it. Morgan Gibbs-White, a player Spurs were desperate to bring in for his character as well as playing calibre, highlighted what Spurs miss.

“They have got that incredible talent but we showed that fight, hunger and desire more than them,” Gibbs-White told Match of the Day.

“That fight, hunger and desire to stay with a runner, to block a cross, to compete for a cross, for a ball, for a loose ball, to rage against the dying of the Premier League light. Djed Spence, Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso switched off for the Forest goals.

“Others culpable, too. Blame also lies with the recruitment for bringing in some individuals who have the flair but not the fight. It’s not new, it even pre-dates Antonio Conte’s lambasting of players and the club culture.

“It’s a lack of leadership…For now, it’s about players waking up from this sleepwalk towards the Championship.”

What Winter said about Spurs’ financial implications of relegation

Tottenham have already lost one sponsorship deal in the last few weeks, as the threat of Championship football and the financial implications that would bring is beginning to hit home.

Spurs’ Premier League existence has never been at greater threat than it is right now, and whilst going down to the second tier would accommodate a chance to overhaul the squad and start fresh, it would be devastating for the coffers.

Lilywhites fans know that relegation would bring about major financial losses, but Winter has now concretely revealed that it would see the Club lose £150m at a minimum.

“Damaging financially, £150m minimum,” Winter continued.

“Damaging for recruitment – of players and coaches. Would Mauricio Pochettino return if Spurs were in the Championship, a world away from the Premier League, let alone Champions League?

“It would trigger an exodus/sale of players. The only ones who can stop the drop will not suffer long-term – beyond having the stain of relegation on their playing records.”
