Ibrox View: 49ers can add insult to Celtic injury after new striker transfer update

Leeds United forward Joel Piroe could now complete a January switch to Rangers.

Piroe was linked to Rangers in his Swansea City days, but instead moved to Elland Road and remained in the English Championship.

The Dutchman was seen as a target back in 2023 as Michael Beale eyed a move for Piroe at Rangers before he was sacked at Ibrox.

Three years later, a move for Piroe could still be on the cards for Rangers as Danny Rohl looks to add to his side in the final weeks of the window.

The chance of signing Piroe may have just taken a step up, with the 49ers potentially set to prove a point to Celtic this winter.

Leeds United turned away Celtic interest in Joel Piroe

Martin O’Neill’s side are in a similar place to the Light Blues right now and are keen to add attacking reinforcements to their side.

That saw the Hoops showcase interest in the ex-Swansea man, but they have failed in their efforts to bring him to Parkhead.

Leeds have knocked back Celtic’s approach for Piroe due to their ties with Rangers through the 49ers and their various club ownerships.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph reported on Monday that the Whites were “surprised” to receive an approach for the forward in recent weeks.

It has been suggested that ties with the 49ers have stopped Leeds from agreeing a deal, with it being noted as a “non-starter” this winter.

That marks a sizable blow to the Hoops and their prospects this season, especially if Piroe is to make a dramatic move to Rangers instead.

Piroe could transform Rangers in January

The Gers have been in desperate need of a striker who is a guarantee of goals all season.

Cyriel Dessers was let go, and despite the frustration surrounding his missed chances, he was a regular goalscorer for the Light Blues.

Piroe could be the man for Rangers if he is to sign after winning the Championship golden boot, as Leeds were promoted last season.

The 49ers are in charge of Leeds, so have the perfect opportunity to bring the Dutchman up to Govan in an effort to spite Celtic and benefit Rohl’s men.

It is unclear right now how willing the attacker would be to move, but if there is any chance of a deal happening, it could be perfect for the G51 outfit.
