Ibrox View: Gerrard would backtrack on Rangers excuse if he were to accept gig for PL club

Steven Gerrard is reportedly in the frame for the Burnley job after declining a return to Rangers earlier this season.

The 49ers held discussions with the former Ibrox boss about a return to Glasgow, but he decided the timing wasn’t right.

Gerrard has since come out and said that he felt uncertainty about returning to the Bears, despite it being what the 49ers and fans wanted.

Now, the ex-Liverpool star is in the mix to replace Burnley manager Scott Parker if he is sacked, as reported by Alan Nixon on his Patreon this Sunday.

Gerrard had excuses to reject a Rangers return, and things wouldn’t add up if he was offered and to accept the role at Turf Moor this summer.

What has been said about Steven Gerrard to Burnley?

Gerrard said things had to be “perfect” to accept Rangers‘ offer of a return, which would be completely ironic if he were to land the Burnley job.

The Clarets have now had their relegation from the Premier League officially confirmed, and current manager Parker is reportedly set for talks with the club’s hierarchy over his future very soon.

Burnley spent the least out of the three promoted clubs from the Championship last summer, and it was no surprise to see them destined for relegation from winter onwards.

In no way, shape, or form is Burnley a bigger or better club than Rangers, and they are far from “perfect,” as Gers were at the time Gerrard turned them down.

Though the Clarets are technically considered a Premier League club, they will be fighting for promotion in the Championship once more next campaign.

But that’s if they even have the ability to compete in the second tier next year, as it would be a complete gamble for Gerrard to take, and one that would reflect poorly on his decision to snub Rangers.

Why Rangers got better end of deal with Danny Rohl

Rangers are in a position where they can win the Scottish Premiership with Danny Rohl, with the Bears now into the final few games of the season.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss was never the first-choice option for the 49ers, and was actually third choice behind Gerrard and Kevin Muscat.

Either way, many Gers fans will be happy that they fell upwards by landing Rohl, as it’s hard to say that they would be any better off if the 49ers secured Gerrard’s return this term.

Gerrard has shown his ceiling in management elsewhere, while the current Gers boss could one day manage an elite-level club, if things continue the way they are.
