Ibrox View: Rangers sale could inflict further misery on Clement, 13 months after sacking

Emmanuel Fernandez’s potential Rangers exit could hand further misery to Phillippe Clement.

Clement was sacked by the Ibrox club in February 2025, 13 months ago, after a dismal 2-0 home loss to St Mirren.

He has since taken over at English Championship side Norwich and has led them away from relegation danger.

Fernandez looks set to be sold for a hefty profit, with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen reportedly chasing his signature.

Rangers could receive big offers for the recently capped Nigeria star, and it could leave Clement reeling as his new club could have been the one getting the windfall.

Why Rangers could land further blow on Clement

Rangers could earn up to £40million for Fernandez, according to Peterborough United director of football, Barry Fry.

That would represent a remarkable turnaround for the Ibrox club, as they purchased him for just £3m from the League One side.

Norwich were interested in the 24-year-old in January 2025, per Pink Un, and it could have been the ex-Light Blues boss reaping the benefits had they signed him back then.

Why Rangers fans will love getting one over on Clement

Gers supporters will love the idea of getting one over on the Belgian manager, after his stint in the dugout in Govan.

It was a miserable time, as his side were not good enough to challenge for the major honours and to take the Scottish Premiership out of Celtic’s grasp.

It may have been a case of the wrong time for the 52-year-old, as the club was in chaos off the field when he was in charge.

However, he did not help himself, his attitude rubbed players the wrong way and his strict tactical principles and unwillingness to compromise meant he was not able to drag the G51 club out of the mire.

It seems like they will have something to laugh about over their former boss in the near future, if the Nigerian ace is sold for big money, as he could have been the one getting a huge sum to reinvest in his squad.

The idea of dealing him another blow, inflicting more misery, would satisfy a lot of supporters on the blue half of Glasgow.
