Ibrox View: Rangers vs Motherwell may mean much more to Berthel Askou than meets the eye

Rangers will be determined to beat Jens Berthel Askou’s Motherwell in the William Hill Premiership on Sunday.

The Gers have dropped below Celtic in the league table for now and could potentially take top spot if they get three points against the Steelmen and Hearts lose to Hibernian on 26 April.

Danny Rohl will be looking to get the better of the Danish manager at Ibrox, but the Motherwell boss has his own reason to break hearts in G51.

Celtic will surely be looking for a new manager at the end of the season once Martin O’Neill likely leaves, and Berthel Askou could potentially be in the frame to take the job at Parkhead.

The game at Ibrox could affect the Motherwell boss’ future in the coming months and there may be more on the line for the 43-year-old head coach than meets the eye.

Rangers can’t afford Motherwell repeat at Ibrox

Motherwell scored late at Fir Park back in February to take points off the Gers in a 1-1 draw.

Despite going down to 10 men, Berthel Askou’s team found an equaliser in the 89th minute to cancel out Nicolas Raskin’s goal early in the first half.

Rohl has shown he can set the Glaswegian outfit up to get past the Steelmen, as was evident in the 1-0 win in December, but the German manager should be looking to make a statement at Ibrox.

With the home crowd on their side, there’s no reason for the Govan side to be conservative in their approach and they should be looking to put the game to bed rather than risk a nervy finish like last time.

Danny Rohl will be confident after what’s happened

When Ryan Naderi got injured at Rangers, fans were concerned about the lack of firepower going into the final few fixtures of the season.

Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski have been hit and miss in the current campaign, but the strikers come into the Motherwell game in good form as both secured a brace against Falkirk.

The German manager will be encouraged by his number nines and must have surely worked closely with them during the mid-season training camp in Spain.

With the Govan side coming into the game refreshed, Berthel Askou may be left disappointed by the end of it, which may have implications on whether Celtic feel he’s the right fit for them.
