Ibrox View: Rohl may need out-of-favour PL club star to get through last mile at Rangers
Rangers should be looking to end Joel Piroe’s misery at Leeds United in the upcoming transfer window.
The Suriname international has fallen down the pecking order at Elland Road in the current campaign and the Gers have been linked with a move for him in recent months.
With the Glaswegian outfit’s new connection with 49ers Enterprises, who own the West Yorkshire side, it’s easy to see why the 26-year-old has emerged as a target at Ibrox.
Danny Rohl could have had Piroe in the winter transfer window, but the centre-forward ended up staying at Elland Road.
Youssef Chermiti has been relied on at Ibrox for the most part at the Govan side recently, but the German manager may need an instinctive finisher to get through the last mile and win silverware in G51.
🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨
The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.
Rangers can’t judge Joel Piroe off Premier League season
Piroe has started just twice in the Premier League this season, failing to score or assist for Leeds.
The attacker hasn’t been given opportunities to prove himself this season, averaging 21 minutes on average per game across 14 league matches, as per Sofascore.
In the 2024-25 campaign, the Suriname international starred for the Whites, and that can certainly give a true reflection of what he could offer at Ibrox.
Statistics Joel Piroe Appearances 46 Starts 36 Goals 19 Assists 7 Big chances created 8 Key passes per game 0.8
Piroe was the hero as Daniel Farke’s team won promotion to the Premier League, scoring 19 goals, providing seven assists and creating eight big chances in the EFL Championship.
The centre-forward recorded 0.9 shots on target per game and could have scored more had he converted some of the 1 big chances he missed.
With the striker winning possession 0.6 times in the final third per game during the league-winning season, he would surely fit perfectly in Rohl’s plans in Govan, with the German manager preferring to play aggressive, counter-pressing football.
Danny Rohl bogged by one aspect in William Hill Premiership
While Chermiti has been in good form in recent weeks, Rangers have struggled for a reliable goalscorer in the current campaign, which will certainly be one of the biggest reasons for their lack of silverware come 16 May.

The Portugal Under-21 international Bojan Miovski, Ryan Naderi and Danilo, who is out on loan at NEC Nijmegen, have failed to perform consistently for Rohl.
Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers weren’t shy about splashing the cash for the German manager in the winter transfer window and they may need to do so again to bolster the attack in the summer.
Piroe can undoubtedly be the finisher the Rohl is looking for to build on the current season’s success and hopefully win major honours in the coming months.
