Industry expert 'surprised' at Newcastle's latest transfer decision

Newcastle United are expected to sell Yoane Wissa this summer even if they make a loss on the striker.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who thought Wissa may have stayed at St James’ Park for another season.

Wissa only joined the club last summer from Brentford after scoring 19 goals for the Bees last season, but his time on Tyneside has been disrupted by injuries.

The Magpies could take a financial hit and sell Wissa this summer as Eddie Howe looks to rebuild his squad following a disappointing campaign.

Newcastle signed Wissa for up to £55million, and it is unlikely that the club will be able to recoup that fee for the 29-year-old, even with his previous Premier League pedigree at Brentford.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes taking a loss on Wissa could hurt Newcastle’s ability to rebuild the squad this summer.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness states the Magpies think it is a “bigger risk” keeping Wissa at the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It would be a loss, and they may well let him go.

“I was surprised. I thought he’d be the one they would have kept, but they feel that keeping him could be a bigger risk than taking the loss and letting him go.

“You’ve got Anthony Gordon, who could realise some bigger value. But if you’re losing on Wissa, then that’s the problem that you’re then eating away already into the money you’re making in terms of squad planning and regeneration.

“They’ve got some big question marks, and they’ve got some key players who could be going, but with Wissa, it did surprise me. It does look like he’s going to be the one who’s going to go.”

Newcastle in transfer race for Sporting star

Newcastle could face multiple departures this summer, and Howe is expected to need to sign a new full-back.

Howe faces a challenge keeping Tino Livramento at the club amid interest from Manchester City, whilst Kieran Trippier has confirmed he will be leaving at the end of the season.

Sources have told Football Insider that Sporting left-back Maxi Araujo is a target for Newcastle, with chiefs impressed at his recent displays against Arsenal in the Champions League.

The 26-year-old can also play further forward on the left flank, and Newcastle face competition from Premier League rivals for his signature.
