Insider: Man United start to have Michael Carrick 'concerns' in next perm. manager latest

Manchester United are having doubts about whether Michael Carrick is definitely the right man to land the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

The interim boss had been the leading contender to extend his spell in the dugout beyond the end of the season, but concerns have been raised after recent performances.

A 2-1 defeat against Leeds United at Old Trafford has led to growing questions about his position, and while he is still seen as a contender, things are less certain.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that a few doubts about Carrick have been creeping in as they continue to eye potential alternatives.

Man United are weighing up multiple managerial options to become their next permanent boss and maintain that a decision will not be made until the end of the season.

Man United could turn attentions away from Michael Carrick

Brown told Football Insider last month that Carrick remains the favourite for Man United, with Old Trafford bosses impressed by the job he has done so far.

The interim manager has earned a significant amount of credit for the way he has turned around their fortunes and led them up to third in the Premier League table.

However, after just one win in their last four games, questions are being asked and the performance against Leeds has heightened their concerns.

“A result like this was always bound to happen,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Michael Carrick has done an excellent job since he took over, but it’s still the same Man United team which had been struggling up until that point.

“So it was always on the cards, and what should worry them more is they’ve got games coming up against Chelsea, Brentford and Liverpool.

“All of a sudden, you’ve lost a couple of games in a row and then questions start to be asked.

“Questions will be asked of Carrick after the Leeds defeat, because losing to Leeds at home as the Man United manager is never going to go down well.

“There are a few concerns creeping in because the performances in the last couple of games haven’t quite been at the same level they were when he first came in.

“So they’re going to keep looking at different options to become their next manager, and it’s not certain that Carrick will be the one they go with.

“He’s done a great job since coming in, but he needs to keep it up if he wants to convince them he is still the best man for the job.”

Who could rival Carrick for the Man United job?

Carrick remains the favourite to land the Man United job as things stand, but they still have a number of big-name options on their radar ahead of the summer.

Chief among those is Julian Nagelsmann, who has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and could be tempted to join after the World Cup.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Nagelsmann is a leading contender for Man United and should be considered the favourite alongside Carrick.

Nagelsmann has experience at Bayern Munich and is a big favourite of United’s director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, who he worked with at RB Leipzig.

The likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Oliver Glasner had also been linked with the position, but are now believed to be outsiders and are unlikely to land the role.
