Ipswich push hard to beat Rangers to new transfer with move made - report

Rangers are pushing hard to further reinforce their squad in the final week of the window.

Danny Rohl’s side has already had a busy month in the market, sealing several deals as they look to strengthen their squad for a title challenge.

Tochi Chukwuani was the first to make the move to Ibrox, coming in for £4million from Sturm Graz, before the Gers added left-back Tuur Rommens just three days later.

Andreas Skov Olsen became Rangers’ third signing of the winter window on 16 January, joining on an initial loan deal from Wolfsburg with an option to buy, but the Glasgow outfit are not done there.

Dan Neil could be next, but it won’t be easy to get a deal over the line.

Rangers face huge battle to sign Dan Neil

Rangers are in the race to sign Sunderland midfielder Neil, and have been tracking the Englishman for some time now.

Neil was left out of the Black Cats squad for their 3-1 defeat away at West Ham United on Saturday, hinting that he is close to a Stadium of Light exit.

However, Rangers have a battle on their hands as they try to lure the 24-year-old to Ibrox.

According to the Sunday Mail in its print edition, Ipswich Town have moved ahead of the Glasgow outfit in the race for Neil, and are pushing hard to secure his signature.

The Sunderland man is high on Rohl’s wishlist, but Rangers are now underdogs to land him, with Kieran McKenna’s side in pole position for a deal.

Dan Neil signing could be crucial for Rangers

Neil has dropped down the pecking order at Sunderland this season, falling behind the likes of Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki and Habib Diarra in Regis Le Bris’ plans.

The midfielder has made just three appearances in the Premier League this term, featuring for only 13 minutes in total.

However, Neil was crucial in Sunderland’s promotion from the Championship last season, starting 47 out of the 49 games as they clinched play-off success.

He made 5.7 recoveries and 1.8 tackles per game across the course of the 2024-25 campaign, as well as winning 4.8 duels.

Dan Neil stats

It’s not just Neil’s tough-tackling nature that would benefit Rangers, though, as he captained the Black Cats to promotion, highlighting his impressive leadership skills.

Rohl’s side must do all they can to beat Ipswich in the race for the Sunderland man, as it could be crucial in their bid for the Scottish Premiership title.
