'It was sweet' - Robbie Keane reacts to wild celebrations after Rangers fan interactions

Robbie Keane admitted it was great to beat Rangers after the Ferencvaros boss was subjected to a lot of “stick” by opposition fans.

Rangers lost 2-1 at Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Thursday night, despite going ahead through Bojan Miovski.

Chaotic Rangers defending outraged Ally McCoist on the night, with Emmanuel Fernandez’s failed attempts to stop the winner in Hungary drawing major criticism from pundits.

Former Celtic striker Keane celebrated wildly at the final whistle, and has since confirmed the fact the win came against his former Old Firm rival made it all the more enjoyable.

Robbie Keane avoided Rangers fans in Budapest city

Speaking live on talkSPORT the morning after the game the former Republic of Ireland international revealed he had been avoiding Rangers supporters in Budapest around the game and was targeted by fans during the match, so was giving it back after getting the win.

Neil Warnock said to him: “No matter what you say about it, ‘it’s just another game’, that’s a load of rubbish. It was Rangers, and deep down I know what it meant to you, and I thought your celebrations were fabulous. Like I say, enjoy every minute because it flies by now in football.”

Keane later replied: “Listen, of course I was getting stick as well during the game, which is normal, which I expect, which I don’t mind. It’s a bit of fun, so of course I’m going to celebrate. But I’m passionate anyway, I was like that as a player, very, very passionate.

“Of course it was sweet to beat Rangers, the amount of stick [I’ve got]. I’ve been putting my hood up walking around the city so I don’t bump into too many [fans].”

Defence made glaring priority for Rangers transfer window

Keane and the Gers supporters would always have had a back and forth given the circumstances, and if you lose the game you have to take your medicine.

Unfortunately for the Light Blues fan base losing is largely what this side has been doing in Europe this term, having had some of their most impressive nights in the same competition in recent years.

Without John Souttar and Derek Cornelius, who haven’t exactly established themselves as unbeatable pillars in defence themselves, a much-changed back line was badly exposed as the hosts came back to win.

The to-do list for the January transfer window is hardly a brief one but, if Miovski can stay fit, the defence looks like it should be clear at the top of the list.

Things have started to take a turn for the better on the whole in the Scottish Premiership, and the apparent wobbles caused at Celtic by the arrival of Wilfried Nancy certainly help, but on the continent this season has been an embarrassment, and has shown up the nightmare summer transfer window as much as anything.
